Rockville Cancels Its Fireworks

Decision follows cancellation of county displays in Wheaton and Germantown.

Following the county's lead, Rockville has canceled its Fourth of July fireworks display for Wednesday, City Spokeswoman Marylou Berg said in an email Monday evening.

Rockville's annual Independence Day celebration was scheduled for 7 to 10 p.m. at . The event was scheduled to culminate in a 20-minute fireworks display.

The decisions come in the wake of Friday's strong storm, which toppled trees and led to across Montgomery County.

Power outages and downed power lines are limiting access to the Montgomery College campus, Rockville officials said in a news release.

"Although Pepco is working to restore power and clear downed power lines, there is no way to guarantee roads will be cleared in time for the event," the release said.

The city considered other options before deciding to cancel the event, Rockville City Police Chief Terrance N. Treschuk said in the release. "It was a tough call, but the public's safety has to come first," he said.
