VIDEO: Rockville Police's Frigid Fundraising for Special Olympics

More than 20 officers took a dip in the chilly Chesapeake as part of the 17th annual Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge on Saturday.

Rockville city police took the plunge on Saturday. But it’s not too late to support their efforts to raise money for Special Olympics Maryland through the annual Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge. More than 20 of Rockville’s finest plunged into the cold waters of the Chesapeake Bay as temperatures hovered near freezing at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, according to a news release. Click the video above to watch the team take the plunge. The team raised more than $4,000 and has raised more than $18,000 in its four years of participation, the release said. The 17th annual plunge where participants run into the chilly Chesapeake Bay will take place on Jan. 26, 2013, at Sandy Point State Park.

Each year, thousands take a quick dip in the Chesapeake Bay for the annual Mayland State Police Polar Bear Plunge, a fundraiser for Special Olympics Maryland. The Plungefest is set for Jan. 26, 2013, at Sandy Point State Park. Frigid Friday for participating schools will take place the day before the Plungefest. To participate in the plunge, you must collect a minimum of $50 in pledges—and if you're younger than 18, you must have a parent or guardian's written consent.   Before you know it, 2013 will be here and so will the annual Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge. Each year, thousands take a quick dip in the Chesapeake Bay to raise funds for Special Olympics Maryland. The Plungefest, which is open to the public, is set for Jan. 26, at Sandy Point State Park. Frigid Friday for participating schools will take place the day before the Plungefest. Participants in the plunge must collect a minimum of $50 in pledges—and if they're younger than 18, they must have a parent or guardian's written consent. It's still early but more than $200,000 has already been raised for Special Olympics Maryland, according to the event's website, which also has a running countdown until the event.
