Bartlett Links Student Loans to Holocaust

6th Congressional District candidate Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett, R-Md., has since apologized for the remark.

U.S. Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett, the Republican congressman campaigning to keep his District 6 seat, sparked controversy for comments he made to reporters Wednesday, stating that federally funded student loans were unconstitutional and that unconstitutional acts could lead down a "slippery slope" to an event like the Holocaust, several news outlets have reported. Bartlett, a 10-term incumbent from Frederick County, Md., could represent Germantown if he defeats Democratic challenger John Delaney, a financier from Montgomery County, during the Nov. 1 election. The Huffington Post and The Washington Post have posted YouTube clips of Bartlett’s comment. According to the video, Bartlett was asked about his stance on the government issuing student …

Doug Duncan Dishes on the Primary

The former county executive expressed frustration with Annapolis while working the polls for John Delaney on Tuesday.

Douglas M. Duncan went through the familiar motions of a candidate on Election Day on Tuesday evening at Robert Frost Middle School in Rockville. The former Rockville mayor, former three-term Montgomery County executive and one-time gubernatorial candidate greeted voters and answered questions. But this time his name wasn’t on the ballot. Duncan announced in November that we would not seek elected office this year after some speculation that he might run for Congress, The Washington Post reported. Instead, he backed John Delaney, who won the Democratic nomination for the 6th Congressional District on Tuesday. “If the idea was to get another Democrat in Congress, he’s by far the best for that,” Duncan said of Delaney on Tuesday. Delaney, a …

Same-Sex Marriage Supporters Push Pledge

Volunteers at polling places on Tuesday solicited signatures on a pledge to support the recently passed law.

In front of Robert Frost Middle School in Rockville, Sharon Vignati and Denise Woodard, armed with clipboards and pens, asked voters Tuesday evening to support an issue that wasn’t on the primary election ballot. In February, the Maryland General Assembly voted to legalize same-sex marriage. Vignati and Woodard want to make sure that stays in place. Opponents are attempting to collect 55,736 valid signatures from Maryland voters by June 30 to block the new law from taking effect on Jan. 1, The Washington Post has reported. If they get the necessary signatures, voters would be asked on the November ballot whether to repeal the law. “We’re asking people to sign a pledge that if it goes to the ballot, that they’ll vote not to let (the repeal…

At End of Primary Campaign, Three Democrats Reflect

In final hours of 6th District primary, Delaney, Garagiola and Pooran cross paths in Rockville.

Near the end of a contentious, expensive campaign, three contenders for the Democratic nomination for Maryland’s 6th Congressional District took time to pose for a photo. At the request of a campaign volunteer, John Delaney, Robert J. Garagiola and Milad Pooran took a break from greeting a steady flow of voters at Robert Frost Middle School in Rockville early Tuesday evening and stood shoulder to shoulder. The three men said they heard similar concerns from voters on the campaign trail, especially about the need for jobs. But each also discussed how the campaign played out in terms of the criticism that two of the candidates lobbed at each other. “Unfortunately the media has focused on the mudslinging more than on the issues and candidates…

Five Candidates Largely Agree at Forum

Democratic disagreements few heading into April 3 primary.

The five Democrats who want to serve the 6th congressional district largely agreed on issues at a candidate forum in Gaithersburg on Sunday afternoon. "Our policies are the same, but our perspective is not," said Ron Little, an anti-trust attorney who lives in Gaithersburg. Laslo Boyd, political consultant and columnist for The Gazette, offered questions from the audience. Little, former public defender Charles Bailey, business executive John Delaney, Sen. Rob Garagiola, and Dr. Milad Pooran, an AIDS researcher at the National Institutes of Health, face off in the April 3 primary. The winner faces the Republican nominee on Nov. 6. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, a Republican from Buckeystown, has represented the 6th district since 1992. He faces …

John Delaney does not live in District 6! Why should any true Democrat in District 6 support a candidate who doesn't live here? Why does the term "carpetbagger" come to mind? Let's all choose a candidate who actually lives in our district and will represent us, and not their own selfish interests.   more ›

Garagiola Campaign Responds to @FakeGaragiola

Campaign manager calls parody tweets ‘despicable.’

The snarky tweets have been circulating since November, when state Sen. Rob Garagiola announced plans to run for U.S. Congress. But now Garagiola's campaign team says parody tweeter @FakeGaragiola has gone too far. The spoofer described Garagiola as a "smarmy," "philandering lobbyist" with "zero" accomplishments and characterized the lawmaker as a dirty politician, questioning his integrity by making claims about his personal life — infidelity, as of late. The account has amassed more than 100 followers and published more than 50 tweets since Nov. 4, around the time Garagiola (D-District 15) started campaigning for the 6th District congressional seat. Garagiola, 39, of Germantown, declined Patch's request for an interview, but campaign …

Looking to 2012: Let the Games Begin

A big election season and economic challenges ahead.

As we begin the New Year, it's a good time to take one last backward glance at what transpired on our local political scene in Montgomery County in 2011 and take a quick look forward to what's in store for 2012.  For some, 2011 was a year best forgotten (just ask Jack Johnson) but this year had its bright spots too — the long-awaited ICC finally opened after over 50 years of planning and delay; the first phase of several key projects of critical importance to the County's economy moved forward, including the new Shady Grove Science Center, White Flint, Wheaton, the East County Science Center and others; Silver Spring's newest hotspot, the Fillmore, opened its doors; and Montgomery County Public Schools welcomed new leadership.  2011 had …

Cardin Ranks No. 43 in Senate Wealth

Mikulski comes in at 92, while Bartlett wealthiest among Maryland House members.

U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) is the 43rd wealthiest senator and U.S. Barbara Mikulski ranks 92nd, according to calculations from the Center for Responsive Politics, published in The Washington Post on Tuesday. Meanwhile, ABC News cited a New York Times study that showed the average American's net worth declined 8 percent, while the net worth of the average member of Congress increased 15 percent. The center's calculations are broad estimates based on Congress members' own disclosures of their assets and liabilities, not including their home. The disclosure forms do not require exact numbers—just estimated ranges. The calculations then are based on the midpoint of each range, subtracting liabilities from assets. Cardin's net worth was …
