Montgomery County Under State of Emergency as Sandy Roars In

Declaration means the county could receive federal aid for storm costs.

County Executive Isiah Leggett declared a state of emergency for Montgomery County on Monday, making the county eligible for federal aid as it responds to Hurricane Sandy, a county spokeswoman said. The declaration allows the county to call upon staff to respond to the storm as needed, Mary Anderson said.  “It’s mainly a human resources [measure] in terms of getting people to work,” Anderson said. “It changes pay structures and it’s also useful in seeking federal reimbursement later on."  States of emergency were declared in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC. Howard County Executive Ken Ulman also signed an emergency declaration for that county. The declaration makes the county eligible for federal reimbursement for overtime hours …

Columbus Day: Eating, Shopping and Parking

What's open? What's closed? Why do we celebrate Columbus Day, anyway?

Columbus Day remembers Italian explorer Christopher Columbus’ long journey across the Atlantic Ocean to the “New World." The voyage was victorious when land was first spotted on Oct. 12, 1492. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt is responsible for making the day a federal holiday in 1937. The day is also considered a celebration of Italian heritage, as well as a huge shopping day.  Many banks and the U.S. Postal Service are closed today in observance of the holiday. In Montgomery County, local government offices and schools are open, though libraries are closed. Ride On and trash collection services will operate as usual today. MCPS has designated Columbus Day for schools to hold open houses, so many parents who are off work may be …

I welcome the forum,. I live in a senior citizen building where there is a bus stop up a incline, that would be dangerous in inclement weather and when you get to the bus stop, there is no shelter. Do you guys ever think about senior citizens?   more ›

Kohl's Opens in Aspen Hill

The community adds its first major retailer in decades.

Aspen Hill welcomed retailer Kohl’s to the neighborhood this week with grand opening sales and a Wednesday morning ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by county officials. Kohl’s will anchor the Northgate Plaza shopping center. Lee Development Group “has invested several million dollars” to renovate the center, the company said in a news release. Northgate Plaza also features a Michael’s craft store and a Rite Aid Pharmacy among its more than 30 tenants. The Lee family built the center, at 3901 Aspen Hill Road, in 1958. The renovation includes expanding the space occupied by Kohl’s from 46,000 square feet to 60,000 square feet. Expanding the space cost about $2.5 million, Washington Business Journal reported. The space had been occupied by …

Montgomery Mojo

Toll Road Scofflaws, Chevy Chase-Bethesda Smackdown, Autsch! Germantown Without Oktoberfest?

Moco Mojo has a lot to tell about these vibrant 500 square miles we call home.

Are you partial to Chevy Chase or Bethesda? It's not like the border dispute between Gaithersburg and Rockville earlier this summer. But why not stir up a little trouble? "Exceptionally livable" is how website AreaVibes describes Chevy Chase, giving it the following marks: That F might have something to do with the approximate median list price of Chevy Chase houses, which is $1.2 million. Even with that mark against it, AreaVibes gave Chevy Chase a "Livability Score" of 87, while Bethesda received an 84. What if the criteria were best cupcakes? Which would come out ahead then? You decide. Cruiser Blues Nearly a third of Montgomery County’s police cruisers were called off the road last week because two officers found themselves with …

Montgomery County Executive Awards Bonus Checks to Employees for Cost-Saving Idea

Leggett: 'Tight economic times' call for 'creative ways to reduce the cost of government.'

Thirty-four Montgomery County Department of Transportation employees received $223 checks from County Executive Isiah Leggett on Tuesday in recognition of their efforts to save the county money with an innovative idea. The bonuses are part of a program that encourages county employees to look for ways to save the county money. Staff from the department’s Sign and Signal Shop established a program for separating and selling the more valuable metals collected as part of the shop’s scrap metal recycling operations. Sales of the metals generated $16,047 in the first year of operation, according to a county news release. “During these tight economic times, it’s even more important that we encourage employees to find creative ways to reduce the …

"tight economic times" Is this a joke? The Montgomery County Board of Education just handed $14.5 million over to one staff member to spend as he likes. No contracts, no competitive bids, no RFPs - just the money to use like Monopoly money. Obviously, times aren't tight at all! MCPS is flush with cash. Even the MCPS Chief Operating Officer said $14.5 million wasn't an amount that anyone should …   more ›

County Pulls 26 Ride On Buses After Latest Fire

Ride On will operate on a reduced service schedule on Thursday and Friday.

After yet another Ride On bus fire, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett has ordered the 26 remaining Ride On Champion model buses permanently removed from service. The most recent fire occurred Wednesday at Bonifant Street and Ramsey Avenue in downtown Silver Spring, NBC reported. It was the second this month and the seventh in three years. Ride On will operate on a reduced schedule Thursday and Friday, as it does on holidays. All routes will have service, but buses will run less frequently. There are three changes to the posted holiday schedule for Thursday and Friday: "We are very fortunate that no one was injured in today’s fire and there were no passengers on the out-of-service bus," Leggett said in a statement.  The county has…
