From singing dogs to a philandering Santa Claus, these recordings came in last place in a recent survey.
Odds are there's at least one Christmas recording filling the airwaves each December which you absolutely, positively cannot stand. Maybe it's something about the vocalist. Maybe the song brings up less-than-cheerful memories. Maybe the carol itself is just plain awful. Whatever the reason, you're not alone. Edison Research, a marketing and polling firm, has published a list of least-liked holiday songs for 2012. To compile its rankings, the company polled a group of 200 women ages 30-49 "who said they liked or loved hearing Christmas music on the radio." (The sample may be somewhat unrepresentative of the broader population, but we're willing to bet a few of these recordings would show up on a great many "least favorite" lists.) Coming …

Several Rockville-area nonprofits are among the partners encouraging Americans to find a way to help others.
Will donating to charity ever be as popular as shopping during the holiday season? A partnership of nonprofits hopes so. Coming on the heels of Black Friday and Cyber Monday—days devoted to consumerism—Giving Tuesday, observed Nov. 27, hopes "to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season," according to the campaign's website. "It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations." See the bottom of this page for links to Rockville-area nonprofits partnering in the effort, including: The effort includes the Twitter hashtag #GivingTuesday, designed to help spread the word. What do you think? Can a social media push get people giving more of their money and time to charities …

We’re launching our annual Deck the House Contest to find the most over-the-top holiday decorations in America—the best “decked” house in the country—the one home so spectacularly decorated that everyone in town jokes your holiday decorations could rival Rockefeller Center’s. If this sounds like your house, upload a photo or video of your home from Nov. 26 to Dec. 16 to deckthehouse.patch.com/contest/rockville. Only residents of Patch towns are eligible to enter. We’ll select 24 regional finalists and, from them, pick one grand prize winner. Patch will pay up to $500 of the utility bill for each finalist, while our national winner will have $100,000 donated to his or her local school district. So, what are you waiting for? Are you gearing up to let your fingers do the walking on Cyber Monday?
Rockville residents who didn’t want to brave the crowds on Black Friday or Small Business Saturday still have one more big chance to save courtesy of Cyber Monday. Similar to the two other major shopping events, Cyber Monday differs in that consumers don’t have to leave the comfort of their own homes (or offices) to take advantage of some pretty big pre-holiday deals. All the bargains laid out for Cyber Monday are for online shoppers only. So how can you find the best deals online this Cyber Monday? While most major retailers that have an online presence aren’t tipping their hats on their online deals just yet, many have splash pages set up that they're inviting shoppers to bookmark in advance of the Nov. 26 shopping holiday. Here are just…

Rockville business organizations encourage a "shop local" approach that benefits nonprofits.
Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses in and around Rockville that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. American Express gets the credit for founding the shopping holiday, which got its official start on Nov. 27, 2010, according to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page. Celebrating its third year …

For Black Friday and beyond, here's your guide to the shopping districts, the deals and the big dates for holiday shopping.
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett stood on East Montgomery Avenue in the heart of Rockville Town Center on Tuesday with the holiday shopping season on his mind. “I want to make sure everyone gets an opportunity to go out and shop in Montgomery County,” Leggett said at the close of a news conference to launch the county’s “Shop With a Cop” public safety initiative. “I’d add a little bit to the ‘Shop With a Cop,’” Leggett said. “I want you to shop ‘til you drop with a cop—in Montgomery County.” Today is Black Friday. If you’re looking to follow the county executive's advice and shop local this holiday season, be sure to check out Patch’s “Montgomery County Holiday Shopping Guide.” Get Rockville news in your inbox every morning. …
