Man Burned in Veirs Mill Road House Fire

Fire and rescue spokesman: Injuries are non-life-threatening.

A man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening burns suffered in a fire in a single-family home in the 900 block of Veirs Mill Road in Rockville early Wednesday evening, a county fire and rescue service spokesman said.  County firefighters responded to a call for the fire at 5:07 p.m., said Capt. Oscar Garcia. The fire was knocked down in about 10 minutes, Garcia said. About 55 firefighters were on the scene, he said. A helicopter could be seen hovering over the scene about 5:45 p.m. Traffic was heavy in the area, Garcia said. The cause of the fire or where in the home it originated was not immediately known. State Highway to Hold BRT Open House

Transportation officials will field questions about Veirs Mill Road project on Wednesday.

An open house on Wednesday in Wheaton will give residents a chance to learn more about a planned bus rapid transit system along Veirs Mill Road, the State Highway Administration announced in a news release. SHA will present information about the planned transit project between the Wheaton and Rockville Metro stations. There will be no formal presentations. Attendees will be able to view displays about the project from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Multi Purpose Room of the Holiday Park Senior Center. Representatives from SHA, the Montgomery County Department of Transportation and the Maryland Transit Authority will discuss a BRT planning study. Man Pleads Guilty in Fatal Rockville Pike Hit and Run

The man charged in a fatal hit and run on Rockville Pike in September faces up to 10 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to homicide by motor vehicle while under the influence. Michael Charles Dalton Jr. entered the guilty plea in Montgomery County Circuit Court in Rockville on March 1, The Gazette reported this week. Dalton, 23, from Perkasie, Pa., was living in College Park at the time of the incident. Roberto Nassar, 30, of the unit block of South Frederick Road in Gaithersburg, was operating a motor scooter northbound on Rockville Pike near Edmonston Drive when police say it was struck from behind by a tan 1997 Buick LeSabre driven by Dalton. Nassar was thrown from the scooter. He was taken to a local hospital where he died.  …

Update: Man Charged in Pike Crash Out on Bond

Update, 7:25 p.m., Sept. 23: Michael Charles Dalton, Jr., the driver charged in Thursday's crash that killed a motor scooter rider on Rockville Pike, posted bond and was released from the Montgomery County Detention Center on Friday, county police said in a news release. Dalton's bond was reduced from $1 million to $15,000 during a bond hearing in Montgomery County District Court in Rockville on Friday. His next court appearance is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 21 in District Court in Rockville. Pedestrian Bridge Opens in Aspen Hill

The Veirs Mill Road project received $5.3 million in federal and state funding.

State and county officials, designers and cyclists celebrated the opening of the multi-million dollar Rock Creek Pedestrian Bridge on Saturday in Aspen Hill. The span is suspended like an airy green tunnel over busy Veirs Mill Road  and includes artistic engravings reflecting the area's industrial past. It connects two parts of Rock Creek Hiker-Biker Trail over the road at its intersection with Aspen Hill Road just southeast of Twinbrook, eliminating the need for cyclists, hikers, runners and pedestrians to cross the road in order to stay on the trail. Rockville Woman Identified as Victim in Wheaton Hit and Run

Husband and wife were struck as they stepped off a bus on Veirs Mill Road on Monday night.

Update, 3:07 p.m.: Demetrio Gomez Sanchez, one of two people struck by a car in a hit-and-run incident on Monday in Wheaton is now listed in fair condition at Suburban Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said. Sanchez, 43, of Rockville, had been in critical condition immediately after the incident in which his wife, Maria De la Paz, 39, was killed. Attempted Sexual Assault Near Twinbrook Parkway

Man grabbed 20-year-old woman along Veirs Mill Road.

Police detectives are investigating an attempted sexual assault that occurred on Monday evening just east of Twinbrook Parkway along the shoulder of Veirs Mill Road, county police said in a news release. Officers from the county police department's 1st District, Rockville City Police and Maryland-National Capital Park Police responded to a call at about 7:10 p.m. A 20-year-old woman said that she was walking along Veirs Mill Road toward Aspen Hill Road from the direction of Twinbrook Parkway between 6:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. when an unknown man approached her from behind and tried to start a conversation, according to the release. Scooter Passenger Dies; Charges Pending

Investigation continues into Veirs Mill Road hit-and-run

Noel Hernandez Mendoza, 16, of the 12800 block of Evanston Street in Rockville, the passenger on the gas-powered scooter  that police say was struck by a Mercedes-Benz on Veirs Mill Road on Oct. 18, died of his injuries just before midnight on Sunday. The scooter driver, Mario Claros Hernandez , 19, of the 5000 block of Aspen Hill Road remains in serious condition at the Suburban Hospital trauma unit.  The scooter had lights.  Both riders were wearing helmets.
