PHOTOS: Fire Officials Provide New Details on Rockville Civic Center Playground Arson

The Department of Juvenile Services is handling the case involving four juveniles, fire officials said.

An arson fire that destroyed playground equipment at Rockville Civic Center Park on Thanksgiving eve caused an estimated $160,000 in damage, county fire investigators said Thursday. Fire officials for the first time provided details of the arrest of four teenagers whom law enforcement officials say are responsible for the fire. Rockville Patch first reported the incident Tuesday. Temporary fencing and the remains of police tape surrounded the melted and charred remains of the playground equipment Thursday afternoon. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel responded shortly after 8 p.m. Nov. 21 to the playgroud on the Civic Center grounds at 603 Edmonston Drive, the fire and rescue service said in a news release.   The City of Rockville’s David Scull Park will receive $154,000 for new playground equipment through Maryland’s Program Open Space, according to the state Department of Natural Resources. The equipment was one of 11 recreational projects approved Wednesday by the state Board of Public Works. The board, which comprises the governor, the comptroller and the treasurer, approves state spending on major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement. “It is essential that our families have safe, accessible outdoor spaces to enjoy,” said Lt. Governor Brown (D), who sat in for Gov. Martin O’Malley at Wednesday’s meeting. “Children that spend time outside gain an appreciation for their …

This would be a great opportunity to introduce Rockville to “science playgrounds”. Across the country, there are many examples of how communities have integrated science and physics into their public playgrounds. For just a little additional investment, we could have coupled pendulum swings, giant seesaws, and kinetic sculptures. Add to them plaques that explain the science involved, and we get …   more ›

Children's Park Play—Will it Predict the Future?

Wondering if I have a president, an engineer—or a trapeze artist on my hands.

This is the first time since I’ve had my three children that I am able to come close to finishing a conversation with a friend while our kids play at the park. I’ve only recently even considered stopping for a cup of coffee on the way and then proceeding to drink it while we're there, for fear of drenching myself in the scalding stuff as I run to rescue a screaming kid. Now, with a kids who can eat, drink, and, walk on their own, I feel like it’s an altogether different ballgame. It’s all about my spot on the playing field when we’re at the park.  Lately, I have to strategically position myself so that I can see each child as he or she is playing. On a good day, they play in the same spot, on the same piece of equipment, for probably only …
