Rockville Election 2011

Marcuccio, Gajewski Reflect on the Mayoral Race

Gajewski: 'Now other people will have a turn.'

Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio said that she believes that voters who re-elected her on Tuesday appreciate her efforts to increase citizen input in Rockville government. “I think people probably responded to the fact that I am a ‘people mayor.’ I am a person who listens to our citizens, I care a great deal [about] what happens to the city, from their point of view,” she said. “That’s been my mantle. I reflect, I think, citizen input. I want so much for them to be a part of what kind of decision-making goes on in the city. And I think that message was pretty clear to the voters.” Marcuccio won a second term on Tuesday by a 53 percent to 46 percent margin over two-term Councilman Piotr Gajewski. Rockville voters also re-elected council members …

Sean agreed, and in addition, the district level voting results are not being made known by the county until November 14th. What is up with that? That's unbelievable in this day and age! The district-by-district results should be posted on the city (and county) web sites for each and every district (precinct) as they are counted and reported by the precinct election judge. THis is how it is …   more ›

Gajewski Blasts Marcuccio on Choice Hotels Vote

Councilman charges 'hypocrisy' over mayor's speaking slot at groundbreaking ceremony.

Rockville City Councilman Piotr Gajewski is questioning Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio’s appearance at the groundbreaking of a new headquarters for Choice Hotels International in Rockville Town Center, citing minutes of a closed-door session that show Marcuccio voted against an incentive package to attract the hotel company. The council voted 3 to 2 on Aug. 15 to release the minutes of a closed session in which the incentive package was approved. Gajewski, who is challenging Marcuccio for mayor in the Nov. 8 election, requested that the minutes of the March 14 session be made public. Marcuccio and Councilwoman Bridget Donnell Newton voted against releasing the minutes, which show that the mayor voted against the package and that Newton abstained …

Quit Beating Up on City Employees

Stigile: Before 'a rush to judgement,' the city should conduct a 'no-fault investigation' of the fountain incident at the mayor's announcement.

We should all agree that having the fountains come on during the mayor’s campaign event was unfortunate. She and her supporters deserved to enjoy the moment. Once a decision was made to turn off the fountains, steps should have been taken to ensure that the event went forward without mishap. We should also acknowledge that the incident raises important questions about the use of city facilities for campaign purposes. Prudent people should want to get answers to many questions and not rush to judgment. Unfortunately, instead of waiting for a full airing of the facts, Mr. Jordan pounced on the city manager. The words and tone of his posting last week on Rockville Patch were impolite and accusatory. He characterized the city manager's actions…

Hi again Brigitta. Yes, in fact I was in attendance at the forum. I thought it was very well done and very well moderated. The only thing I didn't like was that each candidate was asked a question, but other candidates generally were not asked the same question, so it left me a little short in comparing responses. I have made a few decisions on who I will support, but I still have questions for …   more ›

VIDEO: Fountain 'Rains' on Mayor's Campaign Announcement

City staff and mayor should have followed campaign policy, city manager says.

A few stray raindrops fell as Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio delivered her reelection campaign announcement speech on Friday evening at Rockville Town Square Plaza. But it was water that sprang from the ground that cut short the mayor’s campaign message and produced a City Hall controversy. On Monday, the mayor said that she “did everything right” in securing a permit for the announcement. Meanwhile, city manager Scott Ullery said that both the mayor and city staff should not have “used city resources to support campaign activity.” Shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Friday—midway through Marcuccio’s speech and about a half-hour before she was expecting it—the Town Square Plaza fountain activated, sending Marcuccio supporters scrambling from chairs set up…

This story is bizzare. It is always interesting to hear all the facts. There are always two sides to a story or issue. Depending on what side you stand, that determines your opinion. If this happened to me I would have been very disappointed. Knowing Mayor Marcuccio she dealt with it at the time in graceful manner, but her supporters might have been disappointed. City Manager Should Apologize for Fountain Incident

Jordan: Fountain going on during mayor's speech is "one of the most bizarre and arrogant abuses of authority I have experienced."

On Friday evening, June 10, I joined other Rockville residents in Town Center to hear Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio announce her decision to seek reelection. Among those in attendance were Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz, Sen. Jennie Forehand, and former Rockville Mayor Steve VanGrack. Seats were set up in the pavilion area in front of the stage. Many senior citizens took advantage of the seating while other people stood or sat near the sides of the stage. After several short speeches, Mayor Marcuccio began her remarks. Several minutes into the speech, the mayor and all those who turned out to hear her speak became victims of the one of the most bizarre and arrogant abuses of authority I have experienced. Dozens of people were sitting in chairs …

VIDEO: Marcuccio Launches Her Re-election Campaign

The mayor outlined her record and her view of city government in an announcement that included a surprise appearance by the Town Square Plaza water works.

Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio announced on Friday that she would stand for re-election during a campaign kickoff at Rockville Town Square Plaza that included endorsements from several former and current mayors and that was interrupted when the plaza’s fountain suddenly sprang to life.  Marcuccio, who defeated Mayor Susan Hoffmann in 2009, said that she would “continue to champion a citizen-driven government.” She listed efforts during her term to make city government more inclusive, including appointing a Communications Task Force, assigning City Council members to serve as liaisons to city boards and commissions and taking council meetings to the Twinbrook, Lincoln Park and Woodley Gardens neighborhoods. Marcuccio received endorsements from …
