Question 6 might not be a big deal for you but it's a HUGE deal for our family.
“Mommy what is this… vote for Question 6?” my youngest says to me on our way out of the door to school. “Um, it’s a yard sign. Come on we are running late. Get your book bag.” “But what does it mean? What is Question 6?” he asks with urgency. I pause. It seems like every important conversation happens when we are rushing out the door or driving and I can’t focus. This time I stop in my tracks because I realize in this moment that school can wait; this is an important conversation for our family. It deserves my full attention. “You know how when you take a test, there are a bunch of questions?” He nods, his eyes are on me, and he’s paying full attention. Parenting is so much easier before you actually have kids.
My oldest turns 21 in December. My youngest hits 11 in mere weeks, as if any of us could be unaware of the looming milestone. And my middle child? Heading for 15 in the fall. I don’t know how it happened. I was just running along as fast as I could, trying to stay two steps ahead and one step behind and the next thing I knew, we were sprinting through the teens. Two steps ahead and one step behind is a parenting trick that has served me well for almost 20 years. By staying two steps ahead, I know what’s coming up and I am prepared. From medicine to organic food, new group offers alternative perspectives and support for parents
Having a baby is a joyous, exciting time. But it’s also a time full of questions. What to do about nursing? How to clean without exposing the baby to chemicals? And for new moms, perhaps the most important question: Who can I talk to about all of this? Starting Tuesday, local moms—as well as dads, grandparents and other caregivers—will have a new place to find support. The Montgomery County chapter of the Holistic Moms Network will hold an open house from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rockville Memorial Library. “This is about building community, and connecting people to their environment,” said Nancy Massotto, executive director of the Holistic Moms Network.
