Study of Giving Ranks Rockville Below County, State

A study in 'The Chronicle of Philanthropy' ranks charitable giving by ZIP code.

  When compared to countywide and statewide levels of giving, Rockville residents gave a smaller percentage of their incomes to charity, according to recent study by The Chronicle of Philanthropy.  The Chronicle published data on how much residents of every ZIP code in the United States donate to charity, based on 2008 IRS tax return information. Rockville Nonprofits Receive United Way 'Shoeboxes'

Community Ministries and Interfaith Works received boxes filled with personal items for clients.

Community Ministries of Rockville and Interfaith Works, also of Rockville, were two of three Montgomery County nonprofits to receive 280 boxes of supplies on Thursday to distribute to clients. The boxes were among more than 2,000 filled with personal and emergency preparedness as part of the United Way of the National Capital Area’s inaugural Shoebox Project. “There are so many people in need within Montgomery County," Nina Golding, director of development for Interfaith Works, said in a news release. "It is so important that there are organizations like the United Way that reach out and support those in need. Like the United Way, Interfaith Works is about neighbors helping neighbors and this is exactly what the Shoebox Project is about.” …

United Way Helps Community Ministries Serve Needy

The Rockville nonprofit seeks increased aid from the city for its housing initiative.

Community Ministries of Rockville will use four community impact grants recently awarded by the United Way of the National Capital Area to support its support of the city’s uninsured, low-income, elderly and Latino communities. United Way of the National Capital Area announced $277,498 in grants to 43 county nonprofit organizations on Feb. 28. The 53 grants will go to support United Way NCA focus areas of education, health and financial stability, according to a news release. The grants to Community Ministries totaled $18,916. The Village at Rockville Donates Beds to African Hospitals

A nurse facilitated the donation of 102 beds through a nonprofit that helps the people of Cameroon.

The Village at Rockville recently donated 102 Hill-Rom hospital beds to hospitals in Africa through the efforts of a nurse at the Safe Bridge of Help, a nonprofit providing health care and education programs to the people of Cameroon. The "gently used" bed were no longer needed by the retirement community, formerly known as the National Lutheran Home, which is undergoing a four-year renovation. TVAR opened a new rehabilitation wing in late January. Odette Fanga, a geriatric nursing assistant, suggested the donation, according to a TVAR news release. Pancakes to Fight Cancer

IHOP offers free pancakes for donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

  If you don’t have time for breakfast, consider breakfast for dinner on Tuesday. And when you think breakfast (or dinner), think pancakes. It’s the return of National Pancake Day. From 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. you can indulge in a short stack of pancakes from International House of Pancakes in return for a donation to the National Capital Area Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Last year, the IHOP at 775 Rockville Pike was named the top fundraiser in the Washington metropolitan area, raising  $32,450 for LLS’s fight against leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and support of patients and their families. Erick's Hope Makes an Impact by Preserving a Memory

Derwood-based nonprofit continues the work of its namesake, three years after his death.

The Derwood resident lived on this earth for 12 years. It was 12 years longer than doctors expected when he was born on March 1, 1996 without a spleen and with six different heart defects. The “miracle child” survived the early struggles and surgery and went on to live an incredibly full 12 years. Erick had a sharp mind and easily absorbed facts and details that most children ignored. Before the age of 5, he could name every president and state capital of the United States. In school, he won awards for his Christian character and for his outstanding academic …
