Traveling on Metro this weekend? Stay informed about delays. Metro will perform system rebuilding work on all but one line in this weekend. The rebuilding work will result in service changes on the Red, Orange and Green lines. Blue or Yellow lines riders can breathe easy, there is no scheduled track work on either line this weekend. Tuesday's Metrorail fire caused commuters to sound off on Twitter.
Metro troubles reared their ugly head again on Tuesday as a track fire on the Red Line in Silver Spring caused significant delays during evening rush hour. Metro will perform system rebuilding work on all but one line in the system through Sunday. This weekend's rebuilding work will result in service changes on the Red, Orange, Blue and Yellow lines. Green Line trains will operate normally between Greenbelt and Branch Avenue. Additionally, Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. Sunday, two hours early, to accommodate the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Five Red Line stations will be closed for the weekend of May 3-5 as Metro does track work: Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen, Silver Spring and Takoma. Metrorail to go to OT if Caps do.
Metrorail, which has a station near Verizon Center (Gallery Place/Chinatown), will stay open an hour later if any Washington Capitals hockey playoff games run late or go into overtime, according to The Washington Post. The Capitals open their quest for the Stanley Cup against the New York Rangers on at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Last year, Game 3 of the Capitals’ playoff series against the Rangers went to triple overtime, ending well after midnight—when Metro typically closes on weekdays. Metro will open 5 a.m. Sunday for the Nike Women Half Marathon.
On Sunday, Metro will open at 5 a.m. to accommodate the Nike Women Half Marathon, whose start line is Metro accessible. Also, due to bridge work, free shuttle buses will replace Red Line trains this weekend, between the NoMa-Gallaudet and Takoma stations, according to a Metro news statement. Free shuttle buses will operate on two routes: The service changes will allow for bridge work at New York Avenue Station, and for tie replacement, insulator renewal and communication system upgrades. Metro takes a break from its rigorous weekend track work schedule during the cherry blossom season, according to a Metro news statement. This year, the break occurs on four consecutive weekends. The remaining two weekends are Saturday and Sunday, and April 13–14. The only planned weekend work during that time will take place late Sunday evenings, when ridership is light, according to Metro. Metro's Red Line ends at Shady Grove near Rockville and Gaithersburg. This year, the break occurs on four consecutive weekends. Improvements at Metro stations could be delayed because of a cut in federal funding for the transit system, The Washington Post reports. The $8 million cut in federal dollars for capital projects is a result of sequestration, according to the report. The cuts could also mean plans to upgrade Metro’s fare card system—which would allow Metro riders to pay for rides directly with a credit card—could be delayed or reduced in scope, The Post reports. It wasn't clear which station improvement plans could be delayed, or whether escalator improvement projects were among them. Police: Suspect was 'yelling and acting erratically' before stabbing.
Update: 1:10 p.m., March 14: A 24-year-old male was charged with second-degree assault with a weapon after police said he stabbed a man while boarding a Ride On bus Wednesday evening at the Shady Grove Metro station, a county police spokesperson said. Mustapha Bamba, of an unconfirmed address, used a pocket knife to stab a 21-year-old man in the leg following an argument, Officer Rebecca Innocenti said. Police were called to the Metro station at 5:41 p.m. and the victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries, she said.
