Metro Delays, Track Work Scheduled Through Sunday

Work will impact riders on the Red, Orange and Green lines through system closing Sunday night.

Traveling on Metro this weekend? Stay informed about delays. Metro will perform system rebuilding work on all but one line in this weekend. The rebuilding work will result in service changes on the Red, Orange and Green lines. Blue or Yellow lines riders can breathe easy, there is no scheduled track work on either line this weekend. Metro troubles reared their ugly head again on Tuesday as a track fire on the Red Line in Silver Spring caused significant delays during evening rush hour. Commuters took to Twitter to share their woes. @MROBart of Washington, DC was happy to have Twitter as a communication channel: "thank u #twitterverse for keeping us folks on the redline informed about the #silver spring FIRE when @wmata has failed to do so!" @wisemetis of Silver Spring had her evening plans impacted: "Red line train on fire at Silver Spring. Metro Delays, Track Work Scheduled Through Sunday

Work will impact riders on the Red, Orange, Blue and Yellow lines starting at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through system closing Sunday night.

Metro will perform system rebuilding work on all but one line in the system through Sunday. This weekend's rebuilding work will result in service changes on the Red, Orange, Blue and Yellow lines. Green Line trains will operate normally between Greenbelt and Branch Avenue. Additionally, Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. Sunday, two hours early, to accommodate the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Metro Closes 5 Red Line Stations for Weekend Track Work

Work will impact riders on the Red, Green, Blue and Orange lines starting at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through system closing Sunday night.

Five Red Line stations will be closed for the weekend of May 3-5 as Metro does track work: Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen, Silver Spring and Takoma. This weekend's rebuilding work will also result in service changes on the Red, Orange, Blue and Green lines, beginning at 10 p.m. Friday. Four stations on the Green Line will be closed (see below for details). Yellow Line trains will operate normally between Huntington and Fort Totten. Metro to Stay Open Late for Capitals Playoff Games

Metrorail, which has a station near Verizon Center (Gallery Place/Chinatown), will stay open an hour later if any Washington Capitals hockey playoff games run late or go into overtime, according to The Washington Post. The Capitals open their quest for the Stanley Cup against the New York Rangers on at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Last year, Game 3 of the Capitals’ playoff series against the Rangers went to triple overtime, ending well after midnight—when Metro typically closes on weekdays. Metro: Shuttle Buses Replace Trains on Part of Red Line

Metro will open 5 a.m. Sunday for the Nike Women Half Marathon.

On Sunday, Metro will open at 5 a.m. to accommodate the Nike Women Half Marathon, whose start line is Metro accessible. Also, due to bridge work, free shuttle buses will replace Red Line trains this weekend, between the NoMa-Gallaudet and Takoma stations, according to a Metro news statement. Free shuttle buses will operate on two routes: The service changes will allow for bridge work at New York Avenue Station, and for tie replacement, insulator renewal and communication system upgrades. To allow for shuttle bus connections, the last train from Glenmont to Takoma will depart 38 minutes earlier than normal on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Metro: Track Work Still on Spring Break

No work is scheduled for Metrorail tracks and stations this weekend, and Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. on Sunday for the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10-Mile Run.

Metro takes a break from its rigorous weekend track work schedule during the cherry blossom season, according to a Metro news statement. This year, the break occurs on four consecutive weekends. The remaining two weekends are Saturday and Sunday, and April 13–14. The only planned weekend work during that time will take place late Sunday evenings, when ridership is light, according to Metro. Red Line: Weekend Track Work Still on Spring Break

Metro takes a break from its rigorous weekend track work schedule during the cherry blossom season, according to a Metro news statement. Metro's Red Line ends at Shady Grove near Rockville and Gaithersburg. This year, the break occurs on four consecutive weekends. The remaining weekends are: March 30 to 31, April 6 to 7 and April 13 to 14. Metro said the only planned weekend work would happen late Sunday evenings, when ridership wes light. Sequestration Cuts Could Delay Improvements At Metro Stations

Metro will likely see $8 million less in federal funding for capital projects, The Washington Post reports.

Improvements at Metro stations could be delayed because of a cut in federal funding for the transit system, The Washington Post reports. The $8 million cut in federal dollars for capital projects is a result of sequestration, according to the report. The cuts could also mean plans to upgrade Metro’s fare card system—which would allow Metro riders to pay for rides directly with a credit card—could be delayed or reduced in scope, The Post reports. It wasn't clear which station improvement plans could be delayed, or whether escalator improvement projects were among them. UPDATE: Person In Custody After Bus Stabbing At Shady Grove Metro Station

Police: Suspect was 'yelling and acting erratically' before stabbing.

Update: 1:10 p.m., March 14: A 24-year-old male was charged with second-degree assault with a weapon after police said he stabbed a man while boarding a Ride On bus Wednesday evening at the Shady Grove Metro station, a county police spokesperson said. Mustapha Bamba, of an unconfirmed address, used a pocket knife to stab a 21-year-old man in the leg following an argument, Officer Rebecca Innocenti said. Police were called to the Metro station at 5:41 p.m. and the victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries, she said. Witnesses told police Bamba and victim, among others, were gathered at a bus stop when Bamba started yelling and acting erratically, Innocenti said. Bamba approached the victim and accused him of …
