U.S. Rep. John Delaney of Potomac says he's optimistic about President Obama's second term.
By Jeremy Barr Capital News Service WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama's second inaugural address, delivered on a cold, cloudy afternoon, set out a clear vision for a more equal, unified America. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office to Obama on Monday, however the president was officially sworn in on Sunday, as constitutionally-mandated. “My fellow Americans, we are made for this moment,” the president said in his 19-minute address. “And we will seize it -- so long as we seize it together.” Obama’s speech eschewed specific policy proposals, though he vowed change on a slate of progressive causes, from global warming to gay rights. “We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the …

Bartlett said gerrymandering cost him the congressional election but the numbers tell a different story.
Capital News Service Congressman-elect John Delaney won Maryland's 6th District race on Election Day with the support of heavily Democratic Montgomery County, as expected, but a surprising number of Western Maryland voters voted to oust long-time incumbent Roscoe Bartlett, an analysis of the numbers shows. Now, those voters expect Delaney to champion their causes. Delaney campaigned by saying he was determined not to "balkanize the district"—splitting it into subgroups that could be targeted with tailored messages. That strategy appears to have paid off. Though the scant polling of the matchup showed Bartlett and Delaney tied throughout the fall, Delaney's 20-point win revealed the Democrat had more bipartisan appeal than any of Bartlett's…

John Delaney speaks to his new Congressional District 6 constituents in announcing his win on election night, ending Rep. Roscoe Bartlett’s 10-term reign in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Maryland proved overwhelmingly "blue" in voting at the federal level.
Capital News Service Democrat John Delaney ended Rep. Roscoe Bartlett’s 10-term reign in the U.S. House of Representatives on an election night that otherwise featured no surprises among Maryland’s federal races. Bartlett, the 86-year-old Buckeystown resident who has represented Maryland’s 6th Congressional District since 1993, fell to 38.1 percent in vote totals Wednesday. Delaney captured 58.6 percent, with Libertarian candidate Nickolaus Mueller taking 3.2 percent. “It has been my great honor to serve the constituents of the 6th District of Maryland for the past 20 years,” Bartlett said in a statement. “Although the election did not have the outcome we had hoped for, we can hold our heads high knowing that we have fought for the …

By CARL STRAUMSHEIM, Capital News Service WASHINGTON -- With days to go until the election and a recent poll showing a statistical dead heat, Rep. Roscoe Bartlett and Democrat John Delaney are storming the 6th Congressional District to persuade the remaining undecided voters to give them the edge on Tuesday. The 6th District is the competitive exception to Maryland’s other congressional races, whose incumbents are all expected to win re-election. A Delaney win in the district, which was redrawn to favor Democrats, could help chip away at the Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. Should Bartlett prevail, however, he will have foiled an attempt by Democrats in Annapolis to redistrict him out of his seat. “Voters have a …

By CARL STRAUMSHEIM, Capital News Service ROCKVILLE—Republican Rep. Roscoe Bartlett and Democrat John Delaney on Sunday night cast themselves as political independents in the race for Maryland's 6th Congressional District during a debate that still featured the kind of partisan bickering dominating national politics. Sunday night’s event, hosted by the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, marked the third time the major-party candidates in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District have debated each other. The debate drew about 225 people to Temple Beth Ami in Rockville. In their race to represent a district that stretches from Oakland to Gaithersburg, both candidates pointed to times when they had exhibited bipartisanship …

According to The Washington Post: Mr. Delaney is an excellent candidate — shrewd, smart, hardworking and independent. He would be a standout representative for the 6th District and a marked improvement on Mr. Bartlett. We endorse Mr. Delaney... By David Gutman Capital News Service CHARLOTTE, N.C. - John Delaney, the Democratic challenger for the U.S. House seat in Maryland's 6th Congressional District, drew praise on Tuesday from many of the same Maryland Democratic politicians who had shunned him during his primary battle. The praise came at a luncheon for the Maryland delegation to the Democratic Convention in Charlotte. Delaney was the luncheon's keynote speaker. Delaney emerged as the Democratic candidate after winning a hard-fought and expensive April primary, in which most of the state's Democratic elite, including Gov. Martin O'Malley, backed his opponent, state Sen. Robert Garagiola. The invitation to speak at the luncheon, where he sat next to Gov. Martin O'Malley, …
