Community Ministries and Interfaith Works received boxes filled with personal items for clients.

Community Ministries of Rockville and Interfaith Works, also of Rockville, were two of three Montgomery County nonprofits to receive 280 boxes of supplies on Thursday to distribute to clients. The boxes were among more than 2,000 filled with personal and emergency preparedness as part of the United Way of the National Capital Area’s inaugural Shoebox Project. “There are so many people in need within Montgomery County," Nina Golding, director of development for Interfaith Works, said in a news release. "It is so important that there are organizations like the United Way that reach out and support those in need. Like the United Way, Interfaith Works is about neighbors helping neighbors and this is exactly what the Shoebox Project is about.” …

Johns Hopkins and Interfaith Works Exhibit Street Vision

An art program creates a home for the homeless and others in need.

The cafe in a building on Johns Hopkins Montgomery County campus is the unlikely host to an exhibit of art that has been life-altering for the artists—homeless and other clients of Interfaith Works—and may just be to visitors, too. “In the chaos of this world and all the things we have to work on, we need to take time to stop and enjoy beautiful things," Marie Henderson, executive director for Interfaith Works, said at a reception for the exhibit on Oct. 18. This was the first art exhibit for the Rockville-based coalition of 165 congregations, which serves 35,000 people from around the county who, as Henderson said, "need a hand up." The exhibit features work by students in a weekly art class at Interfaith's Community Vision center in …

Sending Kids Back-to-School with Full Backpacks

Rockville-based Interfaith Works is accepting school supplies for disadvantaged children.

Heading back to school may seem like a far-off concept for county children enjoying summer break. But a Rockville-based nonprofit is using the summer to prepare to send disadvantaged students back to class with the tools they need. Before the first bells of the school year ring, Interfaith Works will donate backpacks filled with school supplies to students from low-income families. Interfaith's 10th annual school supplies campaign, sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union, collects supplies through late August, using donations to fill each backpack with 22 different items. “We do everything from kindergarten to 12th grade," said Julie Kirby, director of development and community outreach for Interfaith Works. "Every kid in the …

County Caregivers Consider 'Times Like These'

Providers pondered ethics and challenges and honored their own at an Interfaith Works gathering.

Caregivers from around Montgomery County took time out on Wednesday to ponder the everyday challenges they encounter while providing emergency assistance to clients and to honor their own during the 15th Interfaith Works Caregivers Gathering at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Rockville. About 100 caregivers attended this year's gathering, which focused on the theme of "Compassionate Caregiving in Times Like These." A panel discussion focusing on "Ethical Issues in Emergency Assistance" included a presentation by the Rev. Dr. Steven Willsey, a crisis care coordinator with Adventist Community Services. Willsey's presentation, "Mission: Serving or Evangelizing?" discussed the fine line that faith-based social service providers walk between …

Holiday Giving Project Fills Thanksgiving Baskets — And a Growing Need

St. Patrick's and Edison students bring communities together to serve those in need

The line stretched out the door of the parish hall at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Norbeck Road late Tuesday afternoon. It was a sign of the season and a sign of the times. This week the county's Holiday Giving Project distributed thousands of Thanksgiving food baskets to low-income residents around the county. This year, with the lingering effects of the Great Recession hanging over the holidays once again, there are even more mouths to feed. The Holiday Giving Project helped 9,000 families last year, said the Rev. Rosetta Robinson, the director of congregation and community emergency support for Interfaith Works, a nonprofit contracted by the county to coordinate the program. This year the network of about 20 churches and nonprofits …
