Surprise in store for last weekend of skating
Today is the last day to lace up your ice skates. The ice rink at Rockville Town Center will be closed after today, but there’s a surprise in store for weekend skaters. The folks with Federal Realty said on Thursday that there were plans to greet skaters with a green rink, in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. The rink is scheduled to be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

How popular was the first season of Town Square's ice rink?
With the arrival of spring, Rockville Town Square's ice rink, which opened for its inaugural season with much fanfare in December (just check out these photos from our Neighborhood Gallery) is now closed for the season. Crews were deicing the rink and taking down the skate rental shop at the Town Square pavilion last week. So how popular was the rink with Rockville residents? Did you strap on the skates? Did you enjoy the experience? Are you looking forward to doing it again in the winter? Let us know in our poll and comments below.

Newlyweds catch the eye of passersby on the ice rink in Rockville Town Square.
Sarah Askin, 29, and Michael Cohen, 30, tied the knot at VisArts on Jan. 14 and captured their first wedding photos on the ice rink in Rockville Town Square. The photo shoot caught the attention of passersby and merited a mention during the Citizen's Forum portion of the Jan. 23 Rockville City Council meeting. Here is the couple's story in Sarah's own words. I wish we had some fabulous exciting story for you about how our first date was at an ice skating rink but I'm afraid it's nothing like that. So here goes nothing.... Michael and I met through friends of ours. Michael's friend was dating my friend, and they both agreed that we'd make a great match. We met on August 26, 2009 at a DC United Soccer game. We began seriously dating on Sept…

"Complex" engineering cited in rink delay; Grocery deal hinges on alcohol license
First, the bad news: Federal Realty Investment Trust has informed the city that it will not install an ice rink at Rockville Town Square this winter, Assistant City Manager Jenny Kimball told the City Council on Monday. "They indicated that they appreciated the city's cooperation on the project but found that the engineering was much more complex than they anticipated and they weren't able to pull it off in a timely manner," Kimball said. The company will continue working "with all intents and purposes on doing it next year instead," she said. Next, the good news: Federal Realty is closing in on a lease agreement with a grocery store for Town Square, Kimball said. Now, the catch: "The finalizing of the agreement will depend on obtaining …

With permits still needed, rink won't open before January
Visitors to Rockville Town Square for recent holiday festivities might have noticed the plaza still lacking one sign of the season. City officials say Federal Realty Investment Trust has yet to submit the permit application required to begin construction of an ice rink that city planners approved in October. Federal Realty had hoped to begin construction in late October and open the rink by Thanksgiving. Neil Burka, the property manager for Town Square with Federal Realty, did not return calls seeking comment this week. Reached last week, Burka said he could not provide a timeframe for the rink's construction but said that Federal Realty hoped to file paperwork with the city by Dec. 3. That did not happen. City planning director Susan …

Have not attempted skating since my childhood days when we would "sneak" onto the frozen ponds of Woodmont Golf Course in the 1950's & 60's......"you remember frozen and snowy winters don't you?" We did enjoy watching the many talented and not so talented skaters "do their thing". I think it's a wonderful asset for "downtown" and the popularity will only increase over time.   more ›
