Mayor Marcuccio: 'We’ve been one of the very, very fortunate communities.'
As Tuesday evening set in and Sandy moved out of Maryland, Rockville Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio reflected on the relatively limited number of power outages around the city and came to a conclusion. “Pepco has certainly improved,” she said. The number of outages reported by Pepco for ZIP codes in the city limits did not appear to exceed 2,000 during periodic updates by Patch throughout Sandy. Marcuccio said that the one outage number she saw during the storm showed about 1,000 outages in the 20850 ZIP code, which includes Rockville Town Center and much of the city. “Rockville has fared very well in terms of outages,” said Marylou Berg, a city spokeswoman. Fears that trees damaged during the June 29 "derecho" storm would come down proved …
Ben & Jerry's owners thankful storm didn't leave outages like June's derecho.
As the last vestiges of Sandy swept through Rockville on Tuesday afternoon, Bonnie and Marc Sosin were setting up shop at their Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in Rockville Town Center. It was the first time the couple could remember that a storm with the hype and the fury of Sandy didn’t knock out power to the store. “The derecho was no fun,” Marc Sosin said. “We had four days of no power and a huge insurance claim.” With that experience in mind the Sosins did not open for business on Monday. Instead, they spent Sunday and Monday preparing by moving ice cream out of the shop’s small display freezers and into other freezers packed with dry ice. Fortunately, it was all for naught. This time around, “The power never went out,” Bonnie Sosin said…

There are 308,000 Maryland residents without power and there have been two storm-related deaths.
Editor's note: A death that the state originally attributed to Hurricane Sandy has been retracted and was not hurricane-related. Hurricane Sandy claimed the lives of two Maryland residents and 308,000 were still without power as of 11:15 a.m. Tuesday. A large tree fell on the home of a Pasadena man and killed him Monday night. The first storm-related death was in an automobile accident Monday morning in Montgomery County. State officials originally connected a third death in Prince George's County with the storm, but county officials are no longer linking the death to the storm. A man changing a tire beneath an SUV was killed when the jack slipped, officials said. Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Joshua …

Declaration means the county could receive federal aid for storm costs.
County Executive Isiah Leggett declared a state of emergency for Montgomery County on Monday, making the county eligible for federal aid as it responds to Hurricane Sandy, a county spokeswoman said. The declaration allows the county to call upon staff to respond to the storm as needed, Mary Anderson said. “It’s mainly a human resources [measure] in terms of getting people to work,” Anderson said. “It changes pay structures and it’s also useful in seeking federal reimbursement later on." States of emergency were declared in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC. Howard County Executive Ken Ulman also signed an emergency declaration for that county. The declaration makes the county eligible for federal reimbursement for overtime hours …
