Game of the Week: Damascus Swarms Watkins Mill

Wolverines held the Hornets in check in the first half, but Zach Bradshaw's big plays and the Hornets' running game powered Damascus to a 35-0 Week 2 win.

Watkins Mill had a season-defining upset in mind when Damascus headed into Wolverine Stadium on Friday for a battle between 3A West division foes that had rolled to big wins in Week 1. And for the better part of three quarters, a win didn't seem beyond the Wolverines' reach. But behind Damascus's bruising run game—and a pair of Zach Bradshaw highlights—the Swarmin’ Hornets' turned the hard-fought first half into a fourth-quarter blowout, handing the Wolverines a 35-0 defeat in their 2012 home opener. Watkins Mill (1-1) had its chances early on, as Damascus was slow get in gear. Four times in the first half, the Swarmin’ Hornets crossed into Watkins Mill territory. Two of those drives faltered on 4th down, and one turned Watkins Mill’s way …

Patriots in Must-Win Situation for Homecoming Game

After a 28-7 loss to B-CC last week, Wootton must win against Watkins Mill to keep its playoff hopes alive.

Wootton Patriots head coach Eddie Tolliver tries not to pay much attention to the standings. He leaves that to his assistants, he says. But following a 28-7 loss at Bethesda Chevy-Chase last week, Tolliver's team is running out of time in the 2011 season. Beginning with tonight's game against Watkins Mill, the Patriots need to win out their final three games (WM, Churchill, and Gaithersburg) or win two of three and get some help from other teams in the county. To have any chance to advance, Wootton needs its quarterback to rebound from his worst game of the season. Tolliver pulled his starter, Chris Papadopoulos, for the first time this season after throwing two first half interceptions against B-CC. Papadopoulos later re-entered the game…

Wootton Travels to Blake Looking to Extend Win Streak

Patriots can win three in a row for the first time since the 2008 season.

Sitting above .500 for the first time this season, the Wootton Patriots football team has the opportunity to accomplish another feat for the first time since 2008 when they travel to Blake High School to face the Bengals this evening. Not since that season, which featured Wootton’s last playoff birth and only one since 1991, have the Patriots managed to win three consecutive football games. While head coach Eddie Tolliver likes to focus on one game at a time, he recognizes the importance of such a streak. “I really don’t look ahead towards the playoffs but it would be a good win for the kids,” the second-year head coach said. “Having three wins in a row and a 4-2 record six games in would really give us some momentum going into next week…

Patriots Return Home with Hopes of Returning to .500

Wootton hosts Richard Montgomery Friday night and looks to rebound from last week's loss to Damascus.

It was a quiet bus ride back from Damascus last Friday night. Heading into last week's game against the Hornets, the Wootton Patriots football team had high expectations as it prepared to take on one of the county's top programs. And with good reason. Boasting the county's top-rated quarterback in Chris Papadopoulos, Wootton entered the game with confidence, fresh off a 30-14 win over Kennedy the week before. But the Hornets jumped out to an early 21-0 lead and the Patriots were never able to recover, losing 49-12 and falling to 1-2 on the season. It's a new week though and the Patriots return home for the first time since the season opener, poised to return to .500 as they welcome the 1-2 Richard Montgomery Rockets. To prepare for the …

Wootton Defeats Churchill in Fourth Overtime

The Patriots earned their first win of the season in incredible fashion on Friday.

It took an extra four periods on Friday night, but the Wootton High School Patriots finally earned their first victory of the season. The Churchill Bulldogs made the quick four-mile trek up the road to Wootton on Friday, hoping to extend their winning streak to five games. Considering the home team's 0-6 record entering the contest, a victory for Churchill seemed to be a given. The Patriots however, started strong and never let up, eventually winning 48-42 in four overtimes. Wootton scored the first two touchdowns of the game, both on short runs. A failed extra-point attempt on the second score gave the Patriots a 13-0 lead in the second quarter.  Churchill fired back with two quick scores of their own, one a fumble recovery and the other …
