A fatal accident on Interstate 270 southbound caused major delays Monday morning for commuters in the Gaithersburg-Rockville area.
(Update, 8:20 p.m.) Maryland State Police have identified Maria Durdandal, 50, of Frederick, as the driver who was killed in an early-morning, single-car crash on Interstate 270 southbound near the Shady Grove Road exit, according to an NBC Washington report. Police said the impact of the collision was so severe that portions of the concrete barrier struck by Durdandal's car broke off and landed on northbound I-270, and Durdandal was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report. Three fatal crashes—two involving Rockville residents—have occurred on the road in 2012.
The Maryland State Highway Administration has no plans to reconsider the 50 mph speed limit on Great Seneca Highway following the road's third fatal crash of 2012, SHA spokesman David Buck told Patch. A 69-year-old Gaithersburg woman was killed Sunday evening in a car crash on Great Seneca Highway (MD 119) at Lakelands Drive in the Kentlands area of Gaithersburg. A 21-year-old woman from Rockville was driving one of the cars involved in the crash. It was the second time in six weeks that a Rockville resident was involved in crash along the road. Update, 8:25 p.m. Dec. 21: County police detectives have identified the pedestrian that was struck and killed as he tried to cross Veirs Mill Road near the Randolph Crossing Shopping Center early Sunday as Luis Martinez. Martinez, who was approximately 39 years of age and of an unknown address, was originally from Guatemala, according to a county police news release. The incident remains under investigation. Investigators continue to ask for the public’s assistance in identifying the driver of a black SUV, which was the second vehicle to strike Martinez. The SUV did not stop. Montgomery County Police investigate Saturday night crash on East Gude Drive.
Update, 6:17 a.m.: A 31-year-old Rockville man died Sunday morning after a single-vehicle crash on East Gude Drive, Montgomery County Police reported. Pablo Alejandro Fontana, of the 800 block of Bowie Road in Rockville, was driving a 2004 Dodge Viper with Virginia tags when it left the roadway, struck a light pole, overturned and struck a tree, police said. The incident occurred about 7:48 p.m. near the intersection with Norbeck Road. He was taken to Suburban Hospital where he died at 1:01 a.m., police said. Police do not know why the Viper left the road and detectives from the Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating. State police say alcohol was a factor in crash that also injures one person.
A 26-year-old man is dead after driving his car head-on into another vehicle on Interstate 270 Saturday morning near Gaithersburg. At about 1:50 a.m., the man, of no fixed address, drove southbound in the northbound lane of I-270 near the Shady Grove exit in his Honda Civic, said Trooper Crucillo of the Rockville Barracks. The man crashed head-on into an Isuzu Rodeo, driven by another 26-year-old man, Crucillo said. The name of the deceased has not been released pending notification of family, police said. The driver of the Civic was taken to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
