Are you buying a new winter jacket? Do you have holiday lights that no longer work? Did your kids get duplicate toys this year? Did Santa bring you a new cell phone? If you have items you’d like to toss but aren’t sure what to do with them, a number of collections are taking place in Montgomery County and items can be dropped off right at the Salvation Army at 18705 North Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg, MD. You can also drop off items at Goodwill of Greater Washington at 619 South Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg or 4816 Boiling Brook Parkway in Rockville. Have any unwrapped, unused toys? In 1947, Diane Hendricks made a doll and asked her husband, Maj. Bill Hendricks, a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, to find a local charity in the Los Angeles area that would give it to a needy child. When he was unable to locate one, she suggested that he start one. That year, Maj. Hendricks teamed with other Marine reservists, collecting and distributing 5,000 toys to children that year. In 1948, the Marine Corps adopted the Toys for Tots program and it has been running steadily since, with the help of celebrities such as Bob Hope, Kenny Rodgers and First Lady Michelle Obama. Manna Food Center — Montgomery County's largest food distribution center — is lending a helping hand to more than 300 families in need during Thanksgiving week. The Gaithersburg-based food center will provide 70 pounds of emergency food assistance and donated turkeys to the community, Manna announced Wednesday. Community members can drop off turkey donations to Manna — located at 9311 Gaither Road in Gaithersburg — before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, and they will be passed out to families in need. “The community is instrumental in serving our clients throughout the holiday season and during the rest of the year," Manna Executive Director Minerva Delgado said in a statement. The Montgomery County Volunteer Center is seeking donations to help create Thanksgiving baskets for county residents in need. Items sought include: Donations will be accepted at A Wider Circle, located at 9159 Brookeville Rd. in Silver Spring, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. between Nov. 1 and 20, 2012. Catholic Charities of DC is looking to help feed low-income Montgomery County residents this Thanksgiving. Soley Somma plans to drive a truckload of donations to New York City Tuesday morning to help victims of superstorm Sandy.
Wheaton resident Soley Somma has strong connections to New York City. It's where she met her husband, and it's where her brother now lives. And on Tuesday, Somma and her mother will be driving to the city with a truckload of donations for the people left cold, hungry and powerless in the wake of superstorm Sandy. Somma began collecting food and other emergency items on Friday at her home, and word spread quickly. She and other volunteers worked from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, sorting through items and labeling them. "Every single room in my house is filled," she said. Rockville-based Interfaith Works is accepting school supplies for disadvantaged children.
Heading back to school may seem like a far-off concept for county children enjoying summer break. But a Rockville-based nonprofit is using the summer to prepare to send disadvantaged students back to class with the tools they need. Before the first bells of the school year ring, Interfaith Works will donate backpacks filled with school supplies to students from low-income families. Interfaith's 10th annual school supplies campaign, sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union, collects supplies through late August, using donations to fill each backpack with 22 different items. “We do everything from kindergarten to 12th grade," said Julie Kirby, director of development and community outreach for Interfaith Works.
