Rockville Principal Who Ran in Boston Marathon is OK

Explosions near the finish line of the Boston Marathon killed two but the Lucy V. Barnsley Elementary School principal, who ran in support of his daughter, was unhurt.

Editor's Note: This story about a local school administrator running in the Boston Marathon was submitted prior to Monday's event. Explosions at the finish line of the race killed two and injured a least two dozen others. Patch was unable to reach Andrew Winter, a Rockville school principal who participated in the marathon, but an administrator at Lucy V. Barnsley Elementary School said Winter was unhurt and that he had finished the race before the explosions. According to the marathon results posted online, Winter finished the race in 3 hours, 38 minutes and 55 seconds. --- A principal at a Rockville elementary school will be running in the 117th Boston Marathon in support of his 8-year-old daughter, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes…

Shady Grove Hospital to Launch Diabetes Program

Experts say diabetes education is vital to successful self-management

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital plans to launch a diabetes management program in early spring 2011, hospital officials said this month. The program will be certified by the American Association of Diabetes Educators and is designed to meet the needs of the growing number of people with newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 is the most common form of the disease in which the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin that allows the body to use glucose for energy. "One in 10 people have diabetes," said Judy Lichty, regional director of health and wellness at Adventist HealthCare. "It's projected that by 2050 the number will be one in three. Oyster roast to benefit the fight against diabetes

Barbara and Jeff Black, chefs and owners of the Black Restaurant Group, have been hosting fundraisers for efforts to fight diabetes over the past month at their four fine-dining locations. Their oyster roast on Sunday at Addie's Restaurant is expected to be the biggest. That's hard to imagine given that last weekend at their BlackSalt Fish Market and Restaurant on MacArthur Boulevard in Washington, they went through 4,000 oysters in two hours. On the menu at Addie's this weekend are oysters prepared four ways: raw, roasted, barbecued and fried. For diners who don't care for the bivalves, there is barbecue chicken, roast suckling pig, chili, hot dogs, no-sugar-added desserts and more. The Blacks are planning activities for the entire family…
