Federal Realty Fined for Removing Trees Near Dawson's Market

City of Rockville: The $4,700 fine could increase if conditions are not met.

Federal Realty Investment Trust faces a $4,700 fine from the City of Rockville for removing four trees along North Washington Street. The fine was first reported by The Gazette. Federal Realty, which owns and manages Rockville Town Square, said the trees were blocking the view of the signs and storefront of Dawson’s Market.  The long-awaited Town Square grocery store opened Sept. 29. The removal of the trees, three days before the store’s opening, drew the ire of Rockville residents, who took to social media to voice their displeasure. The City of Rockville sent Federal Realty a letter on Oct. 4 giving the management company 30 days to restore the trees or file a site amendment plan or face additional fines “assessed as a separate …

The sad thing is that Rockville has built into its zoning ordinance that trees will have a lifespan of about 7 years. That determines the itty bitty size of the trees' planting area. Look at the trees on Middle Lane, expensive fastigiate oaks, which are already dying at less than 7 years. Then look at trees in the older neighborhoods, fifty years old and going strong. When someone like Dawson's …   more ›

Moco Mojo: Walking, Shopping, Riding, Eating and Remembering in These 500 Square Miles

Life is rich in Montgomery County. We'll prove it to you.

Sometimes it takes looking back at the bad times to appreciate the good. Tomorrow, Oct. 2, is the 10-year anniversary of what became known as the DC sniper case -- a horrific chapter in local history that began in Montgomery County and became a national story. It's hard to describe to those who weren't here what it was like to fear a random bullet during routine trips to the grocery store or gas station, or to drive past playgrounds and parks empty of children, runners and bike riders. The perpetrators, John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo, were regulars at the YMCA of Silver Spring.  New details of their time there emerge in an account in The Atlantic magazine by Jim Ross, a public health researcher. Read Ross' article here. The …

Rockville Residents in Uproar Over Removal of Town Square Trees

City spokeswoman: Federal Realty violated Rockville's tree ordinance by removing trees near Dawson's Market before obtaining a permit.

Federal Realty Investment Trust violated Rockville’s tree ordinance when it removed four trees along North Washington Street, a city spokeswoman said Wednesday. The trees were adjacent to a surface parking lot at Rockville Town Square that will serve the new Dawson’s Market grocery, which is scheduled to open on Saturday. A Dawson's Market sign for the store stood partially obstructed by the trees, which screened the parking lot—and behind the lot, the storefront—from North Washington Street. Federal Realty, which owns and operates the retail portion of the city’s downtown retail district, submitted a request to the city on Monday to amend the Town Square Forest Conservation Plan in order to remove the trees, Marylou Berg, a city …

Dawson's Market: Town Square Grocery Opening in October

Reps from organic market will be at Hometown Holidays; Construction expected to be complete by early August.

First it was March. Then it was “spring.” Then it was “summer.” Then “fall.” Now the much-anticipated opening of a new grocery store at Rockville Town Square has a month. “October,” said Becky Lakin, Dawson’s Market marketing director, in an interview with Rockville Patch this week. “Now when in October, I can’t tell you.” Rockville officials were updated on the progress of the store’s construction in a brief email from acting city manager Jennifer Kimball on Monday. The email followed a conversation between Kimball and John Pezzulla, director of asset management for Federal Realty Investment Trust, which owns and operates the Town Square retail district. “[Pezzulla] reports that FRIT's original estimate of spring 2012 was not realistic,” …

Dawson's Market Construction To Be Completed In 'Summer'

The new Town Square grocery isn't providing a specific timetable for its opening.

A new grocery store in Rockville Town Square may be opening a few months later than originally planned but “the wait will be worth it,” a spokeswoman for the store said. “Most importantly, we are concerned with taking the time necessary to make sure the store perfectly suits the needs and wants of the customers,” Becky Lakin, the recently named marketing director for Dawson’s Market, wrote in an email response to a question about the opening date. “We will be starting construction in a few weeks and are aiming to have construction completed this Summer.” The store isn’t being any more specific than that. After signing a lease for Town Square in September, Dawson’s Market owner Rick Hood said he expected a March or April opening date. …

New Restaurants On Deck for Town Square

Dawson’s Market opening now scheduled for summer.

Rockville Town Square’s food offerings are changing again. Four new restaurants are scheduled to open in the spring, Federal Realty Investment Trust announced in a news release. Meanwhile, the opening date for Dawson’s Market has been pushed back until summer, Federal Realty, which owns and operates the retail and residential district in Rockville Town Center, announced. No specific opening dates were offered for the restaurants or the grocery store. After signing a lease for Town Square in September, Dawson’s Market owner Rick Hood said he expected a March or April opening date. Federal Realty confirmed a spring opening at that time. A spokeswoman for Federal Realty could not give a reason for the delay this week. A spokeswoman for Dawson…

Grocery Has a Name, But Some Aren't Sure About Naming Rights

The City Council supports the market's lease but is divided on whether its name should be on the Town Square Plaza pavilion.

Rockville City Council members who often disagree on big issues were unanimous on one this week: Monday’s announcement that a lease had been signed to bring Dawson’s Market to Rockville Town Square is a big win for the city. “It’s fantastic,” Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio said. “It’s been four years in the making—like a Cecil B. DeMille extravaganza.” Councilman Piotr Gajewski, who is opposing Marcuccio for mayor in the Nov. 8 city election, agreed that the lease was a long time in coming. The owners of Richmond, Va.-based Ellwood Thompson’s Local Market plan to open Dawson’s sometime in the spring, Federal Realty announced. “We’re thrilled,” Gajewski said. “It seems like it’s a very good fit for Rockville. It seems like it’s very community-…

The name "Dawson's Market" sounds like a good fit. That name has so much Rockville history associated with it. I remember as a kid snooping around the "barn" behind the Dawson's house on Rockville Pike. Carroll Smith, the old caretaker of the property would occasionaly let us "have it" with a couple of barrels of "rock salt" fired from his shotgun. Rose Dawson was a wonderful lady who shared many…   more ›
