Magruder High Hires Bernot as Football Coach

He leaves Rockville High after posting a 16-15 record over three seasons.

The Kevin Bernot era at Rockville High School has come to an end after just three seasons. Col. Zadok Magruder High School Athletic Director Karl Heimbach confirmed that the Rockville head football coach and 1990 Sherwood High School graduate has accepted the vacant head coaching position at Magruder. Rockville Athletic Director Mike Hayes said that Bernot met with players on Thursday to tell them that he was leaving the program. “He’s a good guy, he did great stuff for us at Rockville,” Hayes said. “He’s a good coach and people like him so it’s always sad to see people like that go.” An official announcement on the hiring is expected to be made on Monday, Heimbach said. Bernot was selected from a pool of more than two dozen candidates who…

Louis, It's in the Extra Curricular Handbook, it's a PDF file at the MCPS website, it gives alot of detail. Coffay Gets 20 Years for Crash That Killed Magruder Senior and Two Grads

Judge: “It's time for the community to heal.”

A judge sentenced a Rockville man on Thursday to 20 years in prison for driving the car involved in a crash in Olney that killed a Col. Zadok Magruder High School senior and two graduates in May. Kevin Coffay, 20, pleaded guilty Nov. 10 to three counts of vehicular manslaughter and one count of failing to remain at the scene of a crash where a death had occurred, according to WTOP.com. At the sentencing hearing in a Rockville courtroom packed with friends and family of the victims and defendant on Thursday, a sobbing Coffay apologized. "This is doing nothing but eating me alive inside,” he said, according to WUSA9.com. “Words cannot do justice to the shame and guilt I feel every day. It haunts me every day." Prosecutors argued in court …

It seems that there were accomplices to this crime that got off scott free. The host of the party where Coffay consumed his alcohol had some responsibility to prevent him from leaving the premises with his car keys, especially if his drinking problem was known and his condition was obvious. If he could not be physically restrained, then the police should have been summoned. The passengers in the …   more ›

Winter Sports 2011-2012 Preview

A New Era for Magruder Wrestling

Colonels have a new coach and new leaders for 2011-2012 season.

If you are a fan of high school wrestling in the county, you could count on two things from Magruder for the past decade. First, that Max Sartoph would be in the coaches corner barking instructions to his wrestlers. And second, that there would be a Tolbert wrestling on the mat. However, that all is changing in the 2011-2012 season. Last spring, after the season ended, Sartoph decided to retire from wrestling, saying he wanted to try new things. To help find a replacement, Sartoph went down to the science wing at Magruder and spoke to A.J. Tao, who was coaching at Northwood. “Last year, [Sartoph] pulled me into his office and he updated me on the situation and asked me if I was interested,” Tao said. “I love my Northwood guys, but my goals…
