Students at Rockville's Christ Episcopal School Cast Ballots in Mock Election

Rockville independent school teaches hands-on civics lesson—complete with an Electoral College.

Students at Christ Episcopal School in Rockville got a hands-on look at the electoral process last week as they voted in the school’s mock presidential election. Students in kindergarten through eighth grade “registered” to vote a week before the election. In the days leading up to the election, kindergarteners learned about the qualifications needed to become president and the voting age. Older students learned about political parties, campaign strategies, the popular vote and the Electoral College. Each grade represented a “state,” with a specific number of electoral votes. Christ Episcopal School Hits the Gym

Gold's Gym in Town Square offers students weights, cycling and tai chi.

Christ Episcopal School's location a few short blocks from Rockville Town Square allows students to take advantage of the downtown retail district's amenities. Throughout February and March, seventh- and eighth-grade students go to Gold’s Gym in Town Square twice a week for a full-body workout. CES takes physical education very seriously. Students in kindergarten through eighth-grade attend P.E. classes five days a week. “Having P.E. five days a week, it’s important to mix it up and give the students different options,” said CES athletic director Bryan Maust. Christ Episcopal School's Fall International Festival

Families hosted tables spotlighting culture from around the word.

Christ Episcopal School celebrated the diversity of their community with a Fall International Festival on Oct. 29. The festival featured 15 cultural tables hosted by CES families indigenous to the countries represented. Nations represented included Denmark, Kenya, Greece, Armenia, India, Ethiopia and Pakistan. Each family prepared food and displayed icons and clothes that represented the uniqueness their cultures. The festival came to life thanks to Diversity Committee co-chairs and CES parents Mark Edwards and Brian Shipley.  “As parents of children at CES, we are so proud of the community and kinship that was shared by our families at the Fall International Festival," Shipley said.
