Delegation from China to Visit Rockville Next Week

Tickets are on sale for a 'friendship dinner' with officials from the proposed 'sister city.'

  Rockville will host a delegation from Jiaxing, China next week as the latest step on the path to a new sister cities relationship. Residents have an opportunity to welcome the visitors at a “friendship dinner” on Nov. 2. The dinner will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at VisArts at Rockville Town Square. The Nov. 2-4 visit is part of efforts to develop a sister city relationship with the city of 4.5 million people on the Yangtze River delta in southeast China. On Nov. 3, the Chinese delegation will attend the Rockville Summit at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre, followed by a ceremony dedicating a friendship garden at Glenview Mansion. The garden will include a plaque and peonies—which are widely regarded as China’s unofficial national flower…

Rockville City Council Agenda: A New City Manager and Briefings on Planning, the Chamber and China

Barbara Matthews is expected to be introduced as the new city manager.

  A new city manager, updates from the city's chamber of commerce and the Charter Review Commission, and a briefing by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments highlight the Rockville City Council’s agenda for Monday.   The council also is scheduled to hear an update on a visit by city officials to Jiaxing, China for a mayor’s summit in June. The council meets at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The meeting will be broadcast live on Rockville 11. New city manager The council is scheduled to hold what is expected to be a pro forma vote approving Barbara Matthews as Rockville’s new city manager. The Mayor and Council announced Matthews’ selection as city manager on July 9 following a national search. She will be introduced for the first time …

To Beijing and Back with a Nut Allergy

My oldest is home from China after five long months. I’m seriously considering confiscating his passport.

My son returned from Beijing last weekend. He’d been there, studying Chinese, for the semester. The last few weeks he’d traveled by train through eastern China by himself. I wouldn’t say I was a nervous wreck the entire time but I was anxious to know that he was safe and sound. Part was because he was alone. Part was because he has anaphylaxis to peanuts and sesame. So yes. “Nut Boy” did China and survived. He had two emergencies that stopped my heart and shook him up, but he survived. He found places to eat that were small enough that he could speak to the person preparing the food and feel confident that he would be OK. Basically this meant a series of street vendors, which fit his tastes and his budget perfectly. He wore his MedicAlert …
