Rockville Company Advances to Final Round of InvestMaryland Challenge

ClickMedix places the business of health screening, managing electronic records and remote, real-time data collection in the palm of a health care provider’s hands.

A tech company from Rockville is closer to winning a state-run business competition worth $225,000, Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development announced Monday. ClickMedix was one of nine Maryland businesses to advance to the final round of the InvestMaryland Challenge, a national business competition offering three $100,000 prizes and another $125,000 in cash and in-kind awards, according to DBED.  With a click of a mobile phone button, a healthcare provider with a Click-enabled device can provide mobile health services such as health screening, managing electronic records and collecting data remotely.  According to the company’s website, ClickMedix had also provided mobile-phone based tele-consultation services in Africa, …

One meat: The Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club (7719 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda) opened on March 1 in a circa-1938 Art Deco movie house, Bethesda Patch reported. The club underwent a $6 million renovation by the Bozutto group in 2007. To that, operators added a two-level, 1,800-square-foot kitchen and a 35-foot bar that will serve beer, wine and cocktails. The theater seating was replaced with two tiered levels of table seating for 300 and 200 theater seats to the rear of the space, Bethesda Patch added. Rockville Businesses Enter Second Round of InvestMaryland Challenge

Competition offers grants and services to life science and high tech companies.

Several companies across Montgomery and Prince George’s counties have made it to the second round of the InvestMaryland Challenge, a competition in which start-up companies can win a portion of $300,000 in grants and/or business services. Of the 250 companies that initially applied to the competition, 71 were selected to advance to the second round, with 18 in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. In the second round, the entrants’ business plans will be reviewed and judged with semi-finalists announced Feb. 19, and the Governor’s Cup Award Ceremony held on April 15. Prizes include such things as mentorship programs, strategic consulting services, product development services, incubator space, accelerator programs and small business …

Buy Energy Star Products Tax-Free This Weekend

This weekend is Maryland's annual Shop Maryland Energy weekend.

This weekend is Shop Maryland Energy weekend, when shoppers may purchase select Energy Star products in Maryland and not have to pay any taxes on their purchases. The savings start at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, and end on Monday, Feb. 18, at 11:59 p.m., according to a statement from Comptroller Peter Franchot's office. Marylanders will not pay the 6 percent state sales tax on qualifying Energy Star product purchases.  This tax-free weekend on select Energy Star products results from legislation passed in the 2007 special session of the Maryland General Assembly and is scheduled for the Saturday immediately preceding the third Monday in February through the third Monday of February. Cabin John CalTort Re-Opens on Valentine's Day with New Look

After an extensive re-model, Potomac's California Tortilla is boasting a modernized interior.

Nothing says love like burritos. And just in time for Valentine's Day, the California Tortilla in the Cabin John Shopping Center is re-opening with a brand-new look. The Potomac location has undergone an extensive re-model to upgrade the shop's interior. The "Cal-Mex" eatery now boasts a new color palette to match the cool green tones of CalTort's new logo. The re-design comes on the heels of the move and re-model of downtown Bethesda' California Tortilla, which re-opened with the updated look on Cordell Avenue last fall. Restaurant Inspection Reports Now A Click Away

Montgomery County health officials are now posting restaurant inspection data online at the dataMontgomery website, launched last month as a part of the county’s open government efforts. The website also includes residential permits, completed 311 requests, cable complaints, county contracts, and employee salaries, according to a county press release. Users will be able to view inspection results online for restaurants and other food service establishments, including compliance with food safety requirements, nutritional labeling, the trans fat ban, and the posting of non-smoking signs, according to the release.  Users will also able to sort data by restaurant name or location and view violations and closures, according to county Health and…

Retailers Begin Charging Credit Fees Sunday

A fee of up to 4 percent of a credit card purchase could be added to your bill come Sunday.

Think twice when you pull out your credit card today. A controversial federal court ruling last year has given retailers the go-ahead to tack bank surcharges for credit card purchases on customer bills—starting Sunday. Bank fees between 2 and 4 percent of a credit card purchase had traditionally been covered by retailers making the sales, but smaller businesses without the backing of major corporations usually felt the brunt of these charges.  Ten states prohibit passing fees on to credit card users, but Maryland isn't one of them, according to an announcement issued by the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center.
