Pedestrian Bridge Opens in Aspen Hill

The Veirs Mill Road project received $5.3 million in federal and state funding.

State and county officials, designers and cyclists celebrated the opening of the multi-million dollar Rock Creek Pedestrian Bridge on Saturday in Aspen Hill. The span is suspended like an airy green tunnel over busy Veirs Mill Road  and includes artistic engravings reflecting the area's industrial past. It connects two parts of Rock Creek Hiker-Biker Trail over the road at its intersection with Aspen Hill Road just southeast of Twinbrook, eliminating the need for cyclists, hikers, runners and pedestrians to cross the road in order to stay on the trail. Lakewood Community, City Leaders Dedicate Bridge

Pedestrian crossing over Wootton Parkway opened in time for school year

Rockville officials joined Lakewood Elementary School students, parents and staff on Tuesday to dedicate a new pedestrian bridge that allows students to safely pass over Wootton Parkway. The bridge, between Lindley Terrace and Keynes Lane, connects Glenmore Terrace to the school's campus. In February, an inspection revealed structural deficiencies that led the city to immediately close the bridge. The old bridge was removed in July. Fort Myer Construction Corporation of Washington installed the replacement bridge on Aug. 25 in time for the opening of the school year. The bridge removal and replacement cost $598,000. The bridge features a deck made from long-lasting, insect-resistant hardwood and is fully enclosed by a vinyl-coated steel …
