New column kicks off by examining new virtual, laser-powered bike lights hitting the market.
Hello and welcome to a new regular column here called Mike on a Bike. My name is Michael Theis and I ride bikes a lot, hence the title. I'll be using this column to let you know about news relevant to local cyclists in northern Prince George's County and the Washington, DC, area. Over the next few weeks I'll be visiting and reporting on a number of area cycling events, including the Hyattsville CX, the Crystal City Diamond Derby, the rolling hoopla that is DC Bike Party, and a peek at BicycleSpace social rides. Accident occurred near Woodley Gardens Park on Sunday morning.
Update, 1:30 p.m.: A bicyclist received minor injuries and was cited for leaving a bicycle lane after being struck by a vehicle on Nelson Street near Woodley Gardens Park on Sunday morning, city police said. The bicyclist was traveling southbound on Nelson Street near Azalea Drive at 10:52 a.m., Rockville City Police Chief Terrance N. Treschuk said in an email. The vehicle also was traveling southbound on Azalea when the bicyclist left the bicycle lane "and attempted to cross Nelson at a right angle, and in the process of this cross, was struck by the vehicle traveling southbound on Nelson," Treschuk wrote. Celebration culminates with pit stops for 'Bike to Work Day' on Friday.
Local and national bike organizations are encouraging cyclists to ditch their cars this week for "Bike to Work Week," a national celebration aiming to encourage citizens across the country to bike to work, or for pleasure, on a regular basis. The week culminates in Bike to Work Day on Friday, held rain or shine, when cyclists can make a "pit stop" at one of 58 locations across the Washington metropolitan region for T-shirts, refreshments, giveaways and bicycling advice.
