The Scene: A-RTS @ Rockville Town Square

Photos from last weekend's art fest.

More than 175 artists converged at Rockville Town Square last weekend for the inaugural A-RTS @ Rockville Town Square. The free outdoor art festival highlighted local, regional and national artists hand-picked by a jury of fine art experts. There were also live musical acts. The event was organized by the Bethesda Row Arts Festival team, which submitted these photos to Patch.

2013 Oscar Nominations Have Definite DC Flavor

Nation's Capital features prominently in three Best Picture nominees.

Three Academy Award nominees for Best Picture prominently feature Washington, DC: Argo, Zero Dark Thirty and, of course, Lincoln. While serving as a location for major films is nothing new to Washington, DC, I can't think of another year in which so many DC-centric movies have been nominated. The Washington Post described each movie as "an engrossing, superbly crafted story that plunges viewers into otherwise opaque and unknowable worlds made distant by time, secrecy or both" and believe film attendees will be pleased that the films "enthusiastically celebrate institutions more often mired in dysfunction and public malodor." DC Artist Creates Impromptu Urban Portraits

Washington, DC, artist paints strangers and offers up the portraits as gifts to her unsuspecting subjects.

A Georgetown woman wearing all white and carrying a white dog, a server in a long apron standing outside of Ben's Chili Bowl and a man eating a pastry on a city street: Washington, DC, artist Nicole Bourgea has captured them all for her new project "AS IS: An Urban Portrait Project." Bourgea paints large-scale formal oil portraits, usually on commission. But recently she embarked on AS IS, a project in which she painted eight portraits of everyday people she met on the street. After showing the paintings at a Sneak Peak at The Dunes (1402 Meridian Pl., NW, Washington, DC) this week, she plans to place each portrait where she met the subject and leave it with a note, which reads: "If this is you, this painting is yours to take."
