I'll Have Another Wins Another—at Preakness

With Pimlico triumph, I'll Have Another keeps Triple Crown dream alive.

I’ll Have Another proved the skeptics wrong by winning the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday in exactly the same way he won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago. The Kentucky-bred chestnut colt chased down pre-race favorite Bodemeister in the stretch crossing the finish line first by a neck. In the process, I'll Have Another kept alive hopes for horse racing’s first Triple Crown champion in more than three decades. “More than anything, I’m glad I didn’t disappoint people,” said Mario Gutierrez, I’ll Have Another’s jockey.  “Like I say, it’s not about me. It is about the horse.  From day one, I’ve believed in him.  I’m so happy for him because he’s just a great horse.” Affirmed, in 1978, was the last colt to capture the …

Weigh In On Orioles vs. Nationals

The surprise success of the Orioles and Nationals has the region buzzing.

The Orioles and Nationals "rivalry" has required quotations through the first few years of interleague play around the beltway. This year is different. Entering the three-game weekend set, beginning Friday night at Nationals Park, the two clubs are battling atop their divisions against clubs with star-studded rosters and larger payrolls. So as one of the most important series between these neighboring ball clubs gets underway, the Patch sites in the Maryland area are curious: who are you pulling for in this year's Battle of the Beltway? Are you cheering for Bryce Harper and the Nationals? Or are you behind Adam Jones and the Orioles? While we're at it, which team do you think stands the best chance of staying in the pennant race late into …

Special Needs Hockey Program Hosts Saturday Fundraiser

Saturday at 5 p.m., join the Montgomery County Cheetahs at the Rockville Ice Arena to raise money for their hockey program, allowing youth with developmental challenges to play more on the ice.

The Montgomery County Cheetahs Special Hockey Team at the Rockville Ice Arena hold their first major fundraiser at 5 p.m. Saturday. Proceeds will go to the team equipment and more ice time. The Cheetah program, serving children as young as 5 and adults up to age 21, has used volunteer power and individual giving to support itself since 2006 when it was created. But to increase the amount of time players can compete and practice on the ice, the program would have to double its budget, needing to expand its donor base. The fundraiser is the service project of two 13-year-old boys, Nate Berger and Ben Gold. With the guidance of their mothers, they pulled together the fundraiser for the hockey program for developmentally challenged youth. The …

Sports Fans, Tourists, Track Work Could Mean Major Metro Delays

Transit group: Postpone scheduled track work on Saturday.

Transit advocates are calling on Metro to postpone track maintenance scheduled for Saturday when Metrorail is expected to see an influx of riders to big games for Washington’s hockey and baseball teams. With the weather warming up, Saturday also is expected to be a busy day for tourists using the transit system to visit Washington. “With trains running only once every 24 minutes on most of the Red Line, and four stations shut on the Green Line, the system will not be able to meet the need for its services,” Action Committee for Transit President Tina Slater wrote in a letter sent Tuesday night to Metro General Manager Richard Sarles. The track work and two home games for DC sports teams could make the Saturday midday ride a long one for …
