History: In 1977 David Soukup, a Seattle Superior Court Judge, had concerns about ruling on cases concerning abused and neglected children without enough information about the child. Soukup created the CASA to appoint community volunteers to speak in the best interested of these children in court.

The CASA of Montgomery County in Maryland is a member of the National CASA Association. CASA is a national network of over 950 child advocacy organizations with more than 73,000 volunteers nationally.

How can you help: Do you have 10 - 15 hours to spare a month and would you like to make a difference in a child’s life? Please consider becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and serve as a voice for one of our most vulnerable populations - abused and neglected children. The CASA volunteer’s primary responsibility is to serve as the “eyes and ears” of the Court. Our CASAs research all aspects of their assigned child’s life - his or her present living situation, biological and extended family, school situation, etc.–and make written recommendations to the Juvenile Court as to the child’s best interest.  There are no special education or professional requirements, but our advocates must be at least 21 years old, live in the greater Montgomery County area, and be able to commit for a minimum of one year.

For more information, please contact our office at: (301) 340-7458.

You can also make a monetary donation to the CASA here.
