Out of the Mouths of Babes

A middle school student's view of the presidential campaign.

Back when I was a social studies teacher, more specifically a civics teacher, election time was always fun. Every September and October we would follow the candidates and every four years it was especially interesting following the men running for president. Whom will they choose to be their running mate? What is this years’ hot topic? How will the swing states vote and why?

I happened to be talking to a student at my school about the upcoming elections. He said something that floored me: “Mr. Waddington, all the time that goes into campaigning and the money that goes into the campaign, wouldn’t it be better spent to help Americans?”

I knew what he was getting at, but I asked him to elaborate.

“What I mean is these guys spend millions of dollars trying to win," he said. "Why don’t they use that money to feed the hungry? We know who they are, do we need to see them every commercial break.”
