High School Athletics: Making the Wrong Decision for the Right Reasons

How important is chemistry to a high school sports team?

A good friend’s son was recently recruited to play Division III lacrosse next year despite being a backup goalie for the past two seasons on his high school lacrosse team. Very recently he was told that he would not make the high school team’s season roster despite being a former junior varsity captain, a committed three-year player and a well-respected member of the team. Did I mention he was the only senior recruited to play college lacrosse?

The coach's reasoning is a sound one: If a senior will not be a starter, it’s better to give a younger player a chance to play on the varsity team. I agree, but aren’t there situations where what’s best for the team may require breaking a coach's rule?

It got me to thinking. When is making the wrong decision for the right reasons the right decision?
