Christ Episcopal School Students Debate Gun Control

We all have an opinion. What's yours?

Touched by the events at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the 8th grade at Christ Episcopal School (CES) felt compelled to study gun violence in America and around the world.  The early discussions centered around the question of whether there should be a federal law restricting gun ownership.  Leaving personal opinions at the door, the 8th grade was divided into 2 opposing teams and spent two weeks, researching and refining arguments in favor of and against gun restrictions.  Their research began at CES, but included an off campus trip to the Rockville Public Library where they learned how to access credible evidence.  In school, the 8th grade learned the art of debate with the help of Ms. Virginia Iaquinta, their English and Social Studies teacher and former lawyer.

Finally, the two groups presented their arguments to a panel of 7 judges including administrators, teachers and John Sellinger, a current parents and practicing attorney. Each side presented an argument and the judges, along with the 7th grade, had an opportunity to ask questions.

“The 8th grade did a great job of researching and presenting their arguments, but what impressed me most was their ability to think on their feet and answer some tough questions asked by the judges.  I could not believe the poise and teamwork they demonstrated throughout,” said Trevor Waddington, Director of Admission and one of the debate judges.

In the end the team against the resolution for a federal law won by a score of 91-88 based on a detailed scoring matrix.  The entire 8th grade at CES should be commended for their passion for current events, respect for others’ beliefs and their commitment to one another defending a topic they may not personally believe to be true.
