“As a Maryland Green School, it was important for us to support this wonderful effort to educate our community members about a variety of environmental issues and causes across our nation,” said CES middle school science teacher Alison Johnson, the chair of the school’s Green Committee.

To continue the momentum of the relationship, Anna Awimbo, a CES parent and volunteer at the film festival brought Clean Currents to CES. During the visit, students engaged in a wind-power workshop and learned about carbon emissions, electricity and how to be energy smart.

“It’s so inspiring to watch how excited the children were to learn that they too can make a difference in their neighborhood by being eco-trendsetters," Awimbo said. "One of the best things about CES is that, in addition to its strong academic program, the school is also preparing our kids for a lifelong commitment to service and environmental stewardship."

The visit helped launch the school’s Green Neighborhood Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to encourage as many households as possible in Maryland and D.C. to switch to renewable wind-powered electricity by Earth Day 2012 on April 22. Clean Currents will make a donation to CES each time a household signs up and mentions the school. The proceeds will go toward supporting CES green school activities.

Christ Episcopal School is dedicated to educating well-balanced, globally-aware students. An integral part of that education is understanding our place in the immediate and greater community and how each of us can make a difference for the betterment of the world around us.
