Party for Three Good Causes at VisArts

'Art that Makes a Difference' features live DJs, original artwork, and food and drink to benefit local nonprofits that help children.

The local artist collective Trumpet Mouse is throwing a lively shindig in downtown Rockville on Saturday. It's a party for a cause—three causes, in fact.

"Art that Makes a Difference" hopes to raise money for three local nonprofits that benefit children's education, shelter and health needs: the JJ Metta Memorial FoundationStepping Stones Shelter in Rockville, and the  in Bethesda.

Featuring original artwork, live DJs and a cash bar with food provided by Jackie's Wine Bar in Rockville, the party goes until 1 a.m. in the Buchanan Room on the second floor. Doors open at 5 p.m. Costs $15. The event is for ages 18 and up.

Musical guests will perform reggae, funk, jazz, gypsy, electronic and acoustic numbers all night long.

Brother and sister Rockville rock duo Connor and Mia Scalzi are part of the lineup with their band Whales.

"The dance contest takes place from the moment you step on the dance floor until midnight," said Trumpet Mouse co-founder Jeremy Michael, who promised a shackle-free evening of artistic verve, both on the part of performers and partygoers.

"Our mission is to uplift, inform and inspire," he said of Trumpet Mouse, which was founded in 2009 and has seven active members, several of whom have lived in Rockville.

This is the second annual "Art that Makes a Difference" fundraiser. Last year's event was held at in Rockville. Past beneficiaries include the Sutradhar Insitute of Dance and Related Arts in Silver Spring, Gethsemane Scholarship Institute of Fond des Blancs Haiti in Rockville and Pick Up Americain Kensington.

"We hope to stimulate the local economy, as well as bring awareness to what we think are noble endeavors," said Michael.
