State Playoff Draw Sets High School Basketball Match-ups

The Maryland basketball state playoff seeding draw was held at Columbia’s Long Reach High School on Sunday, officially announcing first-round playoff match-ups for all boys and girls teams in every division, 1A through 4A.

In Maryland, every team is eligible for postseason play. Playoffs are broken up by Class A designation, and then further bracketed by region (north, south, east and west). Generally in each region (for example 3A West), the teams with the four best records are given the top four seeds and receive a bye in first-round play. The rest of the teams are seeded at random and matched up against one another in the first round.

The Rockville boys received the No. 8 seed in the 2A West and will play No. 9 Francis Scott Key. The Rockville girls were seeded seventh and will play No. 10 Wheaton.

The Richard Montgomery boys will be the No. 9 seed in the 4A West and will face No. 8 Walt Whitman. The RM girls got the No. 8 seed and will face No. 9 B-CC.
Magruder's strong regular season earned the boys the No. 2 seed in the 4A West and a first-round bye. They will play the winner of Blair and Paint Branch in the second round. The Magruder girls got the 12th seed and will play No. 5 Walt Whitman.

The Wootton girls were seeded fourth in the 4A West. Due to the small nature of the bracket, they did not receive a bye and will play No. 13 Walter Johnson in the first round. The Wootton boys got the No. 5 seed and will play No. 12 Sherwood.

Game dates, times and sites were still being finalized as of Monday afternoon. In most cases, the higher-seeded team will host with the boys playing on Friday evening and the girls playing on Saturday.
