Rockets Take Home Win in 2011 Opener

RM lacrosse paced by five goals from Burchett, down Springbrook

With a new coach and a young team, the Richard Montgomery boys lacrosse team was looking to make a statement in their first game of the season against Springbrook Thursday night. They did just that, dominating the entire game and winning 10-7 over the Blue Devils.

“It's a great feeling to get the season started off right,” RM coach John Tripplaar said. “Springbrook is a good team, so it was a great win for us and good to be able to pull through.”

RM was led by sophomore Steven Burchett who scored five goals in the game. Adrian Feolo also provided support, scoring two goals of his own.

“He had a great game, he really stepped us for us today,” Tripplaar said about Burchett. “I knew in the offseason that he could be a player that could step up, and he showed what he could do today. We'll be looking for him to lead our attack.”

RM jumped out on Springbrook early, scoring two goals in the first three minutes of the game. They added three more goals in the second quarter, including a very nice goal towards the end of the quarter by AJ Scott, who dove to his right and shot it into the corner of the net. The Rockets took a 5-1 lead into halftime.

The teams went back and forth in the second half. At one point in the fourth quarter, the Rockets held a 10-4 lead. Springbrook wouldn't go down quietly though. They scored two goals in a 37 second span, and then would add another with four minutes left in the game. However, the RM defense was able to hold off the Blue Devils from there, and took home the victory.

“We had to remind them at times that Springbrook could come back,” Tripplaar said. “But the kids were able to pull through at the end, and I couldn't be happier.”

RM will play their second game of the season against Paint Branch Saturday at 7 p.m. at Richard Montgomery.
