Richard Montgomery Ends Season In Disappointing Fashion

Despite a 47-7 loss, the football team finishes with its best record In seven years.

Richard Montgomery's football season came to a disappointing end Friday night as they fell 47-7 to Northwest in the final game of their 2011 season.

Northwest scored 21 points in the first quarter after forcing several turnovers, including an interception returned for a touchdown. They didn't look back from there, scoring all their points in the first three quarters and not giving up points until just a few minutes left in the game.

“They made some big plays early on in the game,” RM head coach Neal Owens said. “We were very shorthanded today and it hurt us...We had 23 guys tonight, and I'm proud of the guys who were here and fought.”

The team finished at 5-5, which was the best record for RM since 2004. After the game, Owens huddled up his team and thanked them, giving special thanks to the seniors, who he made sure to note that they made their mark on this program by having a season like this.

“We had a great group of guys this season,” Owens said. “I am going to look back on this year with a lot of pride for what we accomplished.”

Despite the win for Northwest, they did not make the playoffs either, as Gaithersburg and B-CC took the last two remaining playoff spots that were on the line.

With the season ending, Owens wants to make sure this is simply a step in the right direction.

“The one thing I don't want to happen is to take a step back next year. We have to keep building and moving forward.

To move forward, Owens is going to work similarly to this past offseason.

“Last year we had a core group of 18 guys who was really committed to offseason workouts,” Owens said. “If we can double that group, just imagine what we can do.”

He then added, with a smile, “We'll be starting next week.”
