Five Students Treated for Heat Exhaustion at Magruder High School

The temperature headed toward 90 degrees in Washington, DC on an unseasonably warm day.

(Updated) Five students were treated for heat-related illness Wednesday at an event at Magruder High School in Rockville, Montgomery County Rescue Service said.

Assistant Chief Scott Graham said emergency responders evaluated at least 10 students. Five were treated for minor illness.

Graham said the students were attending a choral festival at the high school. Patch was unable to reach a Montgomery County Public Schools official.

The air conditioning wasn’t on inside the auditorium and heat from the stage lighting may have contributed to the hot conditions inside the school, according to MCFRS spokeswoman Beth Anne Nesselt.

Neselt said Ride On buses were brought in to provide cooling sites for the students.

Graham said reminded people to be careful while enjoying the unseasonalby warm temperatures.

“We know it’s only April, but hydration is a very important part of people’s day,” Graham said. “If you’re planning on being outside, walking around watching cherry blossoms tomorrow make sure you hydrate tonight.”

Temperatures in the region reached record highs—90 degrees in Washington, DC , several media outlets have reported.

According to the National Weather service, temperatures in Rockville were at an unseasonably hot 84 degrees.
