VIDEO: What Bus Rapid Transit Looks Like

Local nonprofit's YouTube clip offers a glimpse of what could look like in Montgomery County

Those trying to imagine what Montgomery County’s  proposed Bus Rapid Transit is supposed be can get a preview of what it could look like, thanks to local nonprofit Communities For Transit.

Last week the Silver Spring-based group posted a YouTube video offering a visualization of what a bus rapid transit system would look on the street. The clip appears to incorporate a 3D animation of a BRT project in Vancouver, WA posted on Vimeo and footage from ThisBigCity.net, an online publication that explores urban trends and offers up content under a Creative Commons license.

Bethesda Now posted the nearly 4-minute clip at its website Thursday.

An attempt to ease traffic congestion for commuters, Bus Rapid Transit or BRT is a proposed network of bus routes would cover about 82 miles and 110 stations throughout the county. The system would create dedicated lanes for the system’s busses take over existing lanes from cars.

The Montgomery County Council recently approved a plan that establishes guidelines for routes and possible station locations for the BRT, but nothing is set in stone.

There was no money set aside for the venture, which would cost between $1 billion and $2 billion to build.

Ten BRT routes are planned for the cross-county network, but not all routes necessarily would be completed at the same time, in the same decade, or at all, Bethesda-Chevy Chase Patch reports.

Five of the proposed routes would pass through Rockville, county records show.
