Jon S. Cardin, a three-term state delegate from Owings Mills, announced Monday that he is a candidate for Maryland Attorney General in 2014.

Cardin, a Democrat, announced in a statement emailed to reporters and a video posted online.

“Families are facing new and complex challenges in today’s rapidly changing world, and I believe Maryland’s next Attorney General must be aggressive enough and savvy enough to stay one step ahead of anyone seeking to harm our families – whether on our streets or in cyberspace,” Cardin said in the statement. “I believe my experience as a State Delegate, an attorney and the father of a beautiful young daughter, uniquely prepare me to fairly protect Maryland families from the next-generation challenges they face.”

Cardin is seeking the office currently held by Douglas F. Gansler, who was first elected in 2006.

Cardin currently represents the 11th District which includes Owings Mills, Pikesville and a portion of Timonium.

Gansler, a Montgomery County Democrat, is expected to formally announce his candidacy for governor in the fall.

Cardin is not the only Democrat interested in succeeding Gansler.

Sen. Brian Frosh (D-Dist. 16) of Bethesda, the chairman of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee, announced the creation of an exploratory committee last year and is expected to formally announce his candidacy.

Del. Bill Frick, another Democrat from Frosh's same Bethesda district, is also said to be considering a run for the office.
