Rockville Taps Out-of-State Help for Storm Cleanup

Many City of Rockville facilities and programs returned to normal operations Thursday morning following the Fourth of July holiday and days of emergency closures as a result of Friday’s storm.

Meanwhile, the city announced in a news release that after assessing storm damage it has hired contractors from out-of-state to help with cleanup efforts beginning today.

“Some areas of Rockville have been hit particularly hard and we are calling for additional assistance,” said Craig Simoneau, the city’s Department of Public Works director. “We take pride in our response efforts but know it will be a long process to clean everything up. We are asking for residents to be patient and set debris out at the curb. Our hardworking crews will continue to make rounds to clear everything as soon as possible.”

One neighborhood that outside contractors will focus on is New Mark Commons, said City Spokeswoman Marylou Berg.

“New Mark Commons was pretty hard hit,” she said. “So there’s a lot of cleanup over there.”

A heat advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. The temperature index could reach 105 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The city is providing cooling centers during normal operating hours at the following locations:

A county-operated also remains open.
