Police Collect Unwanted, Expired Medicines Saturday

Rockville and Montgomery County police stations will accept unused prescription drugs.

Instead of flushing outdated drugs you find in your medicine cabinet, this weekend the Montgomery County Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration will offer a safe way to dispose of unwanted prescription drugs.

Prescription Drug Take Back Day takes place Saturday across Montgomery County. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Montgomery County residents can drop off unwanted and unused prescription drugs at police stations around the county.

Rockville City Police will be accepted unused or unwanted prescription drugs at the department's new station at 2 West Montgomery Ave., in Town Center, the city announced in a news release.

Residents of the Montgomery County Police Department's 1st District, which includes Potomac and Rockville, can anonymously dispose of medications at a collection box in the 1st District station parking lot at 1451 Seven Locks Road. In the event of inclement weather, the drop-off will take place in the station lobby.

Illicit drugs and needles will not be accepted during this take back program. For safety reasons, personal information should be removed from pill bottles.

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission issued a news release stressing the importance of properly disposing of medications so that they do not end up in waterways and drinking water sources.

All drugs collected during the take-back will be incinerated by the federal Drug Enforcement Agency.
