On the Agenda: Planning Commission Recaps Year in Development

The Rockville City Council is also expected to set funding priorities for grants that fund low- and moderate-income housing programs.

Rockville City Council meets at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The meeting will be carried live on Rockville 11. Here’s a peek at this week’s agenda:

Presentation: Planning Commission report

The Planning Commission is expected to present its yearly report—an overview of the commission’s work in 2012, including a list of all the projects the commission reviewed. Part of the discussion is expected to include future projects and whether policies should change.

One planning board issue that proved polarizing is the city’s Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance and Standards. The guidelines are supposed to prevent the city from having more development than its infrastructure and resources can support. But others have argued that the guidelines stifle development and fail to keep schools from becoming overburdened.

A copy of the Planning Commission’s full report is available at the city’s website.

Discussion: Community Development Block Grants

The Mayor and Council is expected to outline funding priorities for federal Community Development Block Grants for fiscal year 2015.

Funneled through the county, Community Development Block Grants are federal funds that must be used for low- and moderate-income housing and development projects.

Outside agencies can apply for block grant funds starting in August. The CDBG application is due to the county on Dec. 1, according to a city report.
