In 30 years, Montgomery Hospice has grown from seven patients to 1,900 patients.

Financials:  provided $13 million in patient services in 2009, according to that year's tax filing.

History: According to the organization's website, Montgomery Hospice is the first independent, homecare/hospice organization licensed in Maryland. The organization started in the basement of a church in Chevy Chase in 1981. Serving seven patients 30 years ago, Montgomery Hospice now serves It served seven patients then and now serves more than 1,900 patients and 7,500 bereavement care clients annually.

How you can help: Montgomery Hospice asks for your support of their $8 million fund-raising effort, which will allow Montgomery Hospice to continue to "gentle the journey" for patients receiving at-home care, inpatient care at the Casey House, as well as to the bereaved through support services.
