Evening Rush Brings More to the Polls

in Rockville buzzed with voters and three of the Democrats vying for the party’s nomination for the 6th Congressional District seat early Tuesday evening.

Candidates and elections judges throughout the day, but by 6 p.m. poll workers said the steady flow of voters was the most they’d seen during the primary.

Between the opening of polls at 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., the precinct reported ballots cast by 90 of the precinct's 1,994 registered Democrats, 44 of 972 registered Republicans and one of 840 voters counted as "other.”

By 3 p.m. the total had increased to 268 Democrats, 148 Republicans and six “other.”

Six voters stood in a swiftly-moving line, waiting in the hallway outside the polling place while four others signed in and six took turns at the voting machines.

“I think this is light because it’s a primary,” said Julian Orenstein, a veteran elections judge.

Polls are open until 8 p.m.
