Cooling Centers Will Be Open Wednesday

Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville remains open as the county's only 24-hour cooling center.

The school is at 250 Richard Montgomery Drive. Residents should bring prescription medicines, critical phone numbers and comfort items such as personal pillows. 

Due to decreased demand, the White Oak Community Recreation Center is no longer needed as a 24-hour center and will close at 9 p.m. Tuesday, the county said in a news release. It will reopen from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

About 86,000 Montgomery County homes remain without power following Friday’s storm, according to the release.

While many county facilities are closed Wednesday in observance of the Fourth of July, several will open as cooling centers:

  • Bethesda Library, 7400 Arlington Road. 240-777-0970. Open from noon to 8 p.m.
  • Mid-County Community Recreation Center, 2004 Queensguard Road, Silver Spring. 240-777-6820. Open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Wheaton Regional Library, 11701 Georgia Ave. 240-777-0678. Open from noon to 8 p.m.
  • White Oak Community Recreation Center, 1700 April Lane. 240-777-6940. Open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Germantown Indoor Swim Center in the South Germantown Regional Park, at 18000 Central Park Circle, in Boyds, will remain open until 6 p.m. on Wednesday. All other county aquatic centers and outdoor pools will operate on normal schedules on July 4.

The county’s Shady Grove Transfer Station, at 16101 Frederick Road, in Derwood, will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 4 to assist residents cleaning up storm debris. Residents visiting the transfer station should use the Frederick Road entrance and follow the “Recycling, Trash and Yard Waste” sign. Click here for more information.
