Candidate Count Rises as Filing Deadline Nears

Gajewski vs. Marcuccio mayoral matchup is set. Three certified as council candidates.

With less than a month until the filing deadline, the field of candidates who have filed to run in November’s city elections is growing.

Councilman Piotr Gajewski’s petition to run for mayor has been certified, the city clerk’s office said on Tuesday.

joins , who also has been certified as a candidate, in the mayor’s race.

Three candidates for the four seats on the City Council are certified to appear on the ballot:

  • , a councilman from 2001 to 2005.
  • , chairman of the city’s Compensation Commission and a 2009 council candidate.
  • Councilwoman Bridget Donnell Newton.

Councilman Mark Pierzchala and city  have declared as candidates for the council, but are not yet certified to appear on the ballot.

Councilman John Britton has not yet filed to stand for reelection, according to the clerk's office.

The city holds nonpartisan elections in odd-numbered years for the four seats on the City Council and for mayor.

Election Day is Nov. 8.

The City of Rockville issued a news release on Tuesday reminding residents that the filing deadline for candidates is Sept. 9.

Candidate packets are available on the city’s website and in the city clerk’s office at . Call 240-314-8280.

Candidates must be 18, must be a registered voter with at least one year of Rockville residency and must submit a petition signed by at least 100 registered voters who live within the city limits.

Registered voters who live within the city limits may vote in city elections. The voter registration deadline is Oct. 10.
