WWII Artifacts Prompt Hazmat Call at State Police Barrack in Rockville

State police: A woman turned in canisters that belonged to her father.

Hazmat crews were called to the Maryland State Police Rockville barrack Thursday after a woman brought in what may have been remnants of World War II munitions.

The woman brought two small canisters to the barrack around 1:45 p.m., said Elena Russo, a Maryland State Police spokeswoman.

One of the canisters contained what Russo described as a “gassy irritant.” The other appeared to be ammunition, Russo said.

The woman told police she found them at a residence in Olney and that she believed her father acquired them while serving in the military during World War II.

“The woman’s concern was that this was some sort of explosive,” Russo said.

The barrack, at 7915 Montrose Road, was not evacuated, but the front door to the barrack was blocked for safety reasons, Russo said.

The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service disposed of the canisters, Russo said.
