UPDATE: Investigators: N. Van Buren St. Fire Caused by Smoking Materials

Blaze sent a woman to the hospital, killed three dogs and did $125K in damage.

 

A that sent a Rockville woman to the hospital and killed three dogs was accidentally caused by improperly discarded smoking materials, county fire investigators concluded. 

The woman was being treated for smoke inhalation. Her condition was not considered life threatening.

The fire did an estimated $125,000 in damage to the home at 207 N. Van Buren St., including $75,000 in damage to the structure and $50,000 in damage to its contents, Beth Anne Nesselt, a county fire and rescue service spokesman said in an email.

The fire broke out about 10 a.m. in the living room of the ranch-style home, Nesselt said. The woman was rescued from a bedroom window on the ground floor at the rear of the home.

It was not clear why the dogs were unable to escape, Nesselt said.

There were no working smoke detectors in the home, she said.

“Residents are reminded to check smoke alarms to ensure they are operational and to call 311 if they are in need of a smoke alarm,” Nesselt said.
