Rockville Man Pleads Guilty to Theft of Police Seizures

Suk "Brian" Ryong Yu faces up to 15 years when sentenced April 10.

A Rockville man pleaded guilty on March 13 to stealing more than $30,000 in seized currency from the Montgomery County Police Department where he was a civilian employee.

Suk "Brian" Ryong Yu, entered a guilty plea in Montgomery County Circuit Court in Rockville to one count of a theft scheme of more than $10,000 but less than $100,000, according to online court records.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 10. He could face up to 15 years and a $15,000 fine. Under a plea agreement, he will serve no more than three years, Yun’s defense attorney, Patrick J. Smith, told The Gazette.

Yun will be required to pay back what he stole, which Smith said would factor in his sentence.

“Realistically, if you want to get restitution pay, you’re not going to get that while he’s in jail,” Smith told The Gazette.

Yun, 39, of Eagle Court in Rockville, was . He was a civilian evidence technician with county police. As such, he had access to the computerized inventory and the seized money.

Police said that Yun manipulated computer inventory records in an attempt to conceal money that he had stolen. A rountine audit during the last week of September turned up several discrepancies between computerized inventory of U.S. currency and actual seizures by the department, according to a police news release.
